Specialised aircraft and aero engine repair facilities form an important component of the aviation industry in Germany. They are responsible for aircraft and aero engine repairs and overhauls that cannot be carried out at the unit level, and by performing such maintenance allow the airframe and aero engine manufacturing facilities to concentrate on the production new aircraft and aero engines. They also act as modification centers, carrying out changes to production aircraft required by the Luftwaffe or foreign customers, again avoiding the disruption of production programmes at the primary aircraft and engine plants.
