A useful ship, at a low price

Non-trivial firepower, adequate protection, and enough speed to stay mostly out of trouble. She can do a lot of useful capital ship jobs, like raider, carrier escort, fire support of amphib ops, or killer of kruiser killers.

Her stability and torpedo vulnerability are the main weaknesses I see, but they're serious. Even one aerial torpedo hit will force her DC officer into much counterflooding, with crippling effect.

Two on the same side and she's done for.

Agree: other than the poor stability and the non-existent torpedo defenses, pretty good. You might look at the Filipino Mindanao class for an alternative take on something in the same size range (faster, but using 28cm vs 30.5cm guns).

I don't usually let the stability on my ships drop below 1.10. If I can't get it that high, I discard the design. I only break my rule with support ships - I'll permit 1.05 there but I'll try to bring it up anyway.

Hmm......

With a little tweaking, she might make a good successor to El Cid..........

Mind if I play with the design?

Hmmmm.... It´s neither fish nor flesh.

Why build such a ship which is too large and expensive as a super-CA but way too weak to fight even older capital ships (don´t even dream of taking on a modern full-scale BB!)?

Doesn´t make much sense to me....

No, details and a picture of that one can be seen here. It was the inspiration for this design though, with a little bit of Zara thrown in.

Speeds good, gives a margin over the treaty BBs. More of BC than a BB though.

However there seems to be a disconnect between the belt armor & turret face and the barbette armor. Shells which can be turned by the belt or turret face will still penetrate the barbette.

However, the critical question is who the planned OPFOR is ? The armor seems geared to defeat around 305mm rounds. The main guns to engage battleship-level armored foes. That actually suggests the elderly Dutch Zeven Provincien class, but there are only two of those.

For what is a man profited...

if he buildeth a ship with a thick belt and a skinny deck in a world of long-range plunging fire?

Given her vulnerability to torpedos, she'll want to use her speed to stay at long range. This being the case, I'd reduce the belt and turret, and bulk up that deck.

If I was Persia I'd put those turrets on three seperate monitors. Those would give much better support to forces ashore and give any enemy naval forces something to think about, ie forcing them to deploy a battleship to counter a small ship rather than a BB having one easy fight and you losing a flagship.
