Model Boats

I seem to remember one (or more) of us plays around with model boats, powered ones that is, rather than static displays. Any chance I could ask a few technical questions?

Thanks

I thought it might have been you Mac.

I'm working on a project at the moment where I'm designing a propeller. Most of the literature relates to large marine vessels but this is a smaller and much less powerful application so I was trying to work from model boats upwards.

I'm after some details on propulsion arrangements - what sort of power motors, types of props, sizes, speeds etc. There are a huge amount of bits available on online model shops but it doesn't link together very well.

Cheers

Hmmm, the hobbie shop I go to specialises in RC boats (everything really, he even has diecast 1/25th scale cars). He might know a few usefull things if I talk to him.

A few questions....
High speed or high torque?
Permanent mount or something you can swap out motors in, for comparison purposes?
Flexible or rigid shaft?
Medium that it is to run in?

High speed is around 5knts for this and we're running in water. Rigid drive shaft going through a gearbox to the prop so choice of rpm is fairly flexible. Quite a range of power, but around 400W ~ 0.5hp maximum.
