Greek News - 1931 Q1

Greek news 1931 (Q1)

The new drydock at Souda Bay has been used to lay down a new Battleship for the Royal Hellenic Navy. The ship, named Megas Alexandros is at the 40,000ton Clieto Treaty limit and will mount 14" guns on a speed of 28 knots. The new flagship will form the core of the three ship battlefleet of the RHN. The design features thick armour with modest speed and a larger number of smaller guns when compared with contempory ships. The ship is expected to complete in 1935 when the battlecruisers will be scrapped. The second battlecrusier will be replaced with a large cruiser, the design of which is tipped to share hull form and machinery with the new carrier, also to be laid down later this year. The new carrier will incorporate lessons from the Anatoli that has been in service since 1927. The first of the D-38 Koloktronis class destroyers are finishing their trials and will enter service in May 1931.
