Petrograd: Morskoi Sbornik - 12 October 1926

Russian Federation government announces completion of Volga-Don Canal, begun over five years ago. It is expected to greatly increase volume of trade, especially Caucasus oil. A number of tankers passed through its locks today, carrying Baku oil to European markets.

It is 90 meters wide, and 8 meters deep. A work force of 40,000 was engaged in its construction, requiring over five years to move estimated 70 million cubic meters of earth.

In a related note, White Sea Canal is approximately 30% completed. It was begun Spring of 1924, and is expected to open in late 1930. Paralell railroad line supporting its construction has been completed.

Feasability studies have begun on canal to link Lake Onega to Volga River, which would Link Baltic and White Seas with Caspian and Black Seas.

Design of commercial oil tanker:

Oil Tanker, laid down 1926

Length, 120.0 m x Beam, 28.0 m x Depth, 2.3 m
6233 tonnes normal displacement (5789 tonnes standard)

Main battery: 2 x 1.3-cm

Weight of broadside: 0 kg

Hull unarmored

Cargo - 3,000 metric tons. 6,470 GRT

Maximum speed for 3451 shaft kw = 14.00 knots
Approximate cruising radius, 8000 nm / 10 knots

Typical complement: 35-46

Estimated cost, $3.181 million (£795,000)

Remarks:

Magazines and engineering spaces are roomy, with superior
watertight subdivision.

Ship is roomy, with superior accommodation and working space.
