At the time when the A-1 was introduced to the Japanese Military Air Force in spring 1917, the design was already obsolete. Still Japan used it for a number of years until the production of better fighters started. A number of A-1s were upgraded to operate from the carriers. The naval version was designated N-1 and was only slightly better than the A-1. The replacement of all the N-1s by the 1MF5 started halfway 1925.

The A-2 was introduced to the Japanese Military Air Force in the summer of 1917. In 1921 a number of A-2s were upgraded to operate from the carriers. It was never liked by the Japanese carrier pilots, who had a great difficulty getting the plane back aboard the carrier. According to myth, any pilot that actually managed to land the N-2 on the carrier would end up with his hair turning white by the end of the week. The replacement of all the N-2s by the 1MF5 started halfway 1925.

During December 1917, the A-3 became part of the Japanese Military Air Force, making it the third fighter to be accepted by the Japanese military. In 1921 a number of A-2s were upgraded to operate from the carriers. There are no plans yet to replace the N-3.
The N-3 and A-3 are the most numerous planes currently in service of the Japanese Military Forces, its champion being Japan’s number one ace, Colonel Oonishi Manzo. The plane was retired from service after the 1933 Talons over Cordoba Fighter Contest and replaced by the A4N.
