Telecommunications of Greece



The first telephone companies appeared in Greece in 1895 and remained as a very rudimentary system until 1930. In this year Anonymus Eteria Telepikononio Ellados (A.E.T.E.) was created to take over and develop the local telephone service. To the end of 1931 it had installed three automatic exchanges in Athens and later it expand to the provinces. Nicosia was the only exception. The island got a local telephone service in 1936 and wasn't until 1939 that was connected with the rest of the Greece.

With the came back of the democracy in 1945 the system was nationalised and turned on to the Organismós Tilepikoinonión Elládos Α.Ε. (O.T.E.). To 1949 there were 19 automatic exchangers in Athens and 36 in the provinces making a total of 9420 lines. Other 364 manual exchangers add other 4230 lines. Nowadays the company have have the monopoly of the telecommunication on Greece.
