Notes on Current German Aircraft Production

A brief exposition on the current activities of Germany’s major airframe producers.

Bf329 Production Group

Bayerischen Flugzeugwerke AG, Augsburg-Haunstetten
Bayerischen Flugzeugwerke AG, Memmingen
Allgemein Transportanlagen GmbH, Leipzig-Mockau
Erla Maschinenwerke GmbH, Leipzig-Heiterblick

These four firms are involved in production of the Bf329 jet interceptor. Production of the older Bf262, which is winding down, is undertaken by Muhlenbau und Industrie at Brunswick-Waggum. Production of the Bf243 piston trainer has been subcontracted to the Siebel Flugzeugwerke, Halle.

Fw340 Production Group

Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau GmbH, Bremen
Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau GmbH, Marienburg
AGO Flugzeugwerke GmbH, Oschersleben

These three firms are involved in production of the Fw340 jet fighter bomber. The last Fw190M for the Marineflieger was delivered from the Focke Wulf Bremen factory in March 1949.

He319 Production Group

Ernst Heinkel AG, Rostock-Marienehe
Heinkelwerke GmbH, Oranienburg
Ostmecklenburgische Flugzeugbau GmbH, Neubrandenburg

These three firms are engaged in manufacture of the He319 night fighter; production is only just getting under way. The factories were previously engaged in manufacture of the He219 piston-engine night fighter.

Production of the Heinkel He177 four-engine bomber at the Oranienburg Works ceased in June 1949 to permit the factory to concentrate on night fighter production.

The Heinkelwerke facility at Waltersdorf bei Berlin is responsible for production of the He500 light transport for the civil and export markets.

Dornier Do335 Production Group

Dornier-werke, Friedsrichshafen
Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke, Halberstadt

The Dornier Friedrichshafen works is the principal design and development centre for the firm. The primary production lines for the Dornier Do.335 naval fighter aircraft and the Do.330 naval maritime reconnaissance aircraft are located there. A second production source for the Do.335 was obtained via subcontract to the Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke, which had previously been engaged in repair and overhaul activities.

The Norddeutsche Dornierwerke AG of Wismar is responsible for design, development, and manufacture of Dornier civil projects, including the Do.27 and Do.28 light transports and the Do.35 commercial amphibian.

Arado Ar234/334 Production Group

Arado Flugzeugwerke, Brandenburg-Havel
Arado Flugzeugwerke, Potsdam-Babelsburg
Arado Flugzeugwerke, Warnemünde

These factories are involved in production of the Ar234 light bomber and Ar334 strike aircraft. Production of the Ar232 twin-engine transport is undertaken at the Arado-Rathenow factory.

Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke Vf 191 Production Group

Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke, Bremen-Lemwerder
Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke, Delmenhorst

These two factories are involved in the production of the VFW Vf191 advanced training aircraft, as well as manufacture of a variety of components for other designs under subcontract.

The Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke works at Sorau in Niederlausitz undertakes the manufacture of the Focke Achelis Fa336 helicopter for the armed forces.

Fieseler Fi220 Production Group

Production of this aircraft for the Marineflieger is undertaken at the Fieseler Flugzeugbau AG of Kassel – Bettenhausen. Flugzeug Reparatur Werke Mannheim of Mannheim-Schönau manufactures components under subcontract.

Overhaul and conversion work of the Fieseler Fi168 is undertaken by the Gothaer Waggonfabrik AG of Gotha-Friedrichroda.

The Junkers Complex

Junkers Flugzeug und Motorenwerke, Dessau
Junkers Flugzeug und Motorenwerke, Kothen
Junkers Flugzeug und Motorenwerke, Magdeburg
Junkers Flugzeug und Motorenwerke, Breslau-Koberwitz
Junkers Flugzeug und Motorenwerke, Leipzig-Schkeuditz

The Junkers firm operates five factories engaged in several aspects of aircraft and aero engine manufacture:

The Dessau Works is the primary developmental centre and principal manufacturing site. Presently it is concentrating on low-rate initial production of the Junkers Ju322 long-range bomber, production of the Junkers Ju390 transport for the civil sector, and developmental work on the Junkers Ju490 long-range civil airliner

The Kothen Works recently completed production of the Junkers Ju288 medium bomber and continues to manufacture the Junkers Ju252 and Ju352 civil airliners. Components of the Ju322 are also manufactured here.

The Magdeburg Works is the principal engine-manufacturing facility of the group, producing piston, turbine-propeller, and turbojet engines for civil and military applications. Engine component work is undertaken at the Breslau-Koberwitz factory.

The Leipzig-Schkeuditz facility is engaged in repair, overhaul, and modification activities for both civil and military aircraft.

Other Manufacturers

Henschel Flugzeugwerke AG of Berlin – Schonefeld presently has no military contracts for new production but is engaged in repair and overhaul work. A new design, the Henschel Hs132 multi-role support aircraft has been developed but production orders have not yet been received.

Wiener Neustadter Flugzeugwerke AG of Wiener Neustadt is engaged in design, development, and production of helicopters for the armed services. The Wiener Neustadter Wf14 is presently in production; the larger Wiener Neustadter Wf21 has just entered low-rate production.

Thanks. There are a few things overlooked, mainly in the civil sector and light sportplanes. Lots of development projects still to see the light of day. But it helps putting a summary where I can find it.
