The joint venture of the city of Hankow and the Bank of China manages the public port of Hankow and its surroundings. It employs nearly two thousand people in the numerous quays and in the adjacent storage and transport facilities. Since Hankow is an industrial center of Central China, here are production companies in many industries are located here, for example vehicle building, mechanical engineering, cement factories, textile factories, chemical plants, an aluminum plant and a brewery. Another focus is iron production and the steel industry with several rolling mills. Thus, the former small inland port has become a major transhipment point of various goods, especially since the Yangtze is also navigable for seagoing vessels to this point. All the city’s terminals are linked with the national rail network permitting rapid movement of cargo to and from the port.

The origins of this company lie with the entrepreneur Shi Yan who in 1921 entered the barge transport business on the Yangtse river. In 1923 he ordered the first tank barge to operate on the river, hauling petroleum from the ports in the Shanghai Bassin to the industrial region of Hankow. In 1925 the Yangtse River Shipping merged with the Anqing Transport and Shipping Company to form the present concern, with its headquarters in Nanjing. Other acquisitions followed over the years. The firm becoming one of the great single operator of inland navigation vessels in China, operating a fleet that includes 180 barges, 87 river motor ships and motor tankers, twenty-one river steamers and fourty-eight motor and steam tugs.

Initially is operated as a freight forwarder, shipping goods regionally along the coast of Formosa. It expanded through the acquisition of smaller companies and soon moved into the operation of its own coastal steamers and barges. Shanghai Ferry Ltd.
The Shanghai Ferry is a system of ferry routes across the Huangpu River in Shanghai. The ferry service started on January 5, 1911 by the municipal authorities in Pudong with a ferry line between Tongren Pier and Donggou. In 1917, another ferry line linking Tongren Pier to Xidu was launched. Two years later, the authorities launched a ferry line between Tongren Pier and Xigou. In 1927, the ownership of the "Pudong Ferry Service" was transferred to the new formed "Shanghai Ferry Ltd.". By 1938, the ferry service operated 6 lines accross the Huangpu river, one laung-haul ferry route, two ferry routes for automobiles and one ferry route for railway with 29 ferry boats, 13 steel floating docks, and 2 wodden docks.

The Yangtse Rapid Steamship Company is successfully operating in Nanjing, one of China's largest inland ports. The founder of the company, Zhuang Zhaolin, went to Nanjing from his hometown Xuzhou after the turn of the century. He initially found employment in a coal trade. After many years as a coal merchant, Zhuang Zhaolin decided to expand his sphere of activity. On November 21, 1921, he founded his own forwarding company in Nanjing. The Yangtse Rapid Steamship Company was born. Two Nanjing merchants joined the new company as shareholders. In the early days, mainly transported coals from Shanghai to Hankow and vice versa. But it succeeded in a short time to expand the activities. Within the next few years, the small company expanded enormously. Goods of all kinds were transported along the Yangtze River. In 1928, branches in Shanghai and Hankow were founded in order to handle the increasing freight traffic easier. From the thirties the company also developed another business branch, the tanker shipping.

Canton Salvage and Towage Co. Ltd.
Since its founding as Canton Salvage and Towage Corporation in 1905, the company has been owned by the Chan family. The history of the shipping company, however, goes back to the port worker San Min Han (died 1919), who founded a service company in 1879 in the upcoming Canton harbor and offered towing services, mooring and goods transhipment. In 1891, Han bought his first harbor tug. One year later he ordered his own new vessel. In 1897, Lien Chan became the first commercial clerk in San Min's company and sorted the administrative affairs of the company. He made the entry of the company in the commercial register as "Stevedore and Towing Company San Min Han" and operated a membership in the stock market. In 1905, the company now operated as a public limited company under the management of Lien Chan and San Min Han. The capital, divided into 400 bearer shares, was $ 400,000. The entry in the register on November 25, 1905 is considered the founding date of the shipping company. The new corporation expanded its business and operated, in addition to the port towing and other port assistance, also towing in the South China Sea and occasional rescue operations. With the death of San Min Han's the corporation was dissolved again and converted into a limited partnership, with Lien Chan as general partner. He then renamed the company into "Canton Salvage and Towage". In the following years the business could be extended further and further.

Under "Canton Towage", in addition to the towing business, a number of other ship and harbor assistance companies are now also merged, such as mooring, ship reporting, ship repair and steel construction. Currently, the shipping company owns 22 tugs, from a simple pusher to a big ocean salvage tug.
