Fuso development
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll kick this section off with the Fuso
This is how the design of the fuso developed since I joined the sim.
This is the first design of the Fuso I had without a stability warning. The few designs I had before this one had a stability under 1.00. This design is also reasonably historical.
I moved the file to another directory, but the date is january 22.
Fuso, laid down 1912
Length, 640 ft x Beam, 94.0 ft x Depth, 28.3 ft
30889 tons normal displacement (29581 tons standard)
Main battery: 12 x 14.0-inch (6 x 2; 3 superfiring)
Secondary battery: 16 x 6.0-inch

Re: Fuso development
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were quite a few things that I could improve with the design. The stability was a mere 1.04 and I had a hull strength of 1.09. Speed was a mere 21.7 knots and it had a 8,000 NM range at 10 knots. So I made a few adjustments. One major adjustment was size, the other was the AA guns. I'll blame the last one on Oonishi and his father .
The date of this design is january 28.

Re: Fuso development
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Correct order now]
March 1 saw a test for a different Fuso. Laid down in 1914 rather than 1912, I changed the 6x2 main gun layout to a 3-2-2-2-3 layout. It was just a test. Speed was decreased by half a knot and range increased to 17,000 NM at 12 knots. This was the first Fuso design where I changed the extent of belt armor.

The latest design of the Fuso. One change was made: 75 tons of miscellaneous weight required for something. With this addition the Relative composite hull strength went from 1.01 to 1.00 without a caution. (I did have one with the Nagato design)

The 75 tons is important, for 2-3 aircraft. The USN worked on aerial spotting in the '20s, and found it significantly increased the effectiveness of long range (beyond 20,000 yds) fire. You never made a better investment of 75 tons
Fast, for 12x14" guns. The main battery turret armor is a concern though. Its actually lower than the belt, despite the fact that there's a good deal of cordite in there...
The deck is okay, for the time, but soon that 15"/42 will be showing up on HMS Queen Elizabeth, and <then> there will be worries about plunging fire.
I would seriously consider dropping your Fuso's speed back to 22-23 kts, and bulking up the main battery turret and the deck.

Re: Fuso development

I just used the 'springstyle rule' of minimal 25 tons for an aircraft. So that would be three of them.
Speed is 1 knot faster than historical. Turret armor is 1 inch thinner than the historical (a bit low. I might see if I can increase it a bit) but deck is a bit higher than historical. Historical at that time, Fuso's deck was 32-51mm (1.26" - 2.00") while this one is average of 2" (so maybe 1.5" - 2.5"). So the deck will be okay for now but probably needs to be increased during modernisation. While the last one is the latest, it probably won't be the last.

Re: Fuso development

So why retain a mere three inches along the fore and aft belts? That's not going to stop very much ordnance. Why not drop it to 0, and see if hull strength increases enough to raise freeboard a foot or two? Then those poor lads at the secondaries might get to stay dry...
The evolution of the design is interesting, particularly the 3-2-2-2-3 iteration.

The only way I've found to keep the poor lads in the secondaries dry is to put them above the main deck. Even enough freebord to get "good seaboat" doesn't seem to help main deck secondaries.

Well, if those guys want to stay dry, then they shouldn't have joined the navy.
