Ersatz Yorck vs Hood?

which one do you like better? And while we're there, how would Machensen have fared?

cheers

My point of view...

As it seems neither ERSATZ YORK nor MACKENSEN would have been able to stand up against 381mm gun fire from HOOD. In return HOODs armor (as redesigned) wasn´t thick enough to protect her against 350mm or 380mm shells too. Such a battle might have been decided by training (FC!) and tactics more than by technical features of either design.

What has to be considered:

- HOOD would have used Green Boys giving her an advantage in shell design and thus striking power

- german designs more than once proofed to be able to take some punishment without exploding or sinking thanks to superior subdivision and stable powder - on the other hand their turrets always lacked some armor resulting in toothless but still sailing capitals (BCs both at Doggerbank and Jutland)

- HOOD would have a speed advantage but only of ~2kn

- Germans optical FC (stereo) has to be rated superior to the british FC making first hits more likely to land on HOOD

- Size does matter - and HOOD is some thousand tons larger than her opponents

- HOOD features an advantage in gun range due to the limited elevation possible on german units - depending on weather conditions this could make a difference

- HOODs secondaries are protected by shields only - could make a difference in short-range scenarios

- etc.

Make your bet and roll the dice....
