In an unexpected move the Royal Hellenic Air Force announced today that it would order forty examples for the Yugoslav-built Soko Orao single-engine fighter aircraft to supplement its existing inventory. The order marks the first substantial export order of combat aircraft for the Yugoslav manufacturer, and indicates that the Greek military is considering diversifying its procurement policies. An air force spokesman declined to indicate when the first examples of the new fighter would be received but suggested that the entire order would be received within the upcoming year.
