World Cup 1942

Snip asked me to take over the 1942 World Cup for him, as he's apparently rather busy at the moment.

I'm not going to write it up all that much until we get to the later stages of the tourney, so first time round will just be scores.

Here's the starting brackets:

Quoted

Group A
Romania
United States
Scotland
Iberia

Group B
Australia
Thailand
Colombia
Atlantis

Group C
Japan
Peru
China
Argentina

Group D
Denmark
South Africa
Netherlands
Yugoslavia

Group E
Nordmark
Italy
Ireland
Hungary

Group F
The Philippines
Germany
Chosen
Wales

Group G
Chile
France
England
Mexico

Group H
Bulgaria
Turkey
Brazil
Indochina

I've started with 32 teams, arranged in eight four-team groups, randomly assigned (I used a random number generator to randomize them). Each team plays three games against the other three teams in their assigned group. The two teams with the most wins advance to the next round.

The wins are determined by a dicebot on IRC - essentially, ten coin-flips, with one face representing victory for one team, the other face representing victory for the other. If, out of ten iterations, one team has a clear majority, then they win the game. If the two teams both get five coin-flips out of ten iterations, then the game is a tie.

Scores in the game are similarly rolled with dice: the victorious team gets a score of 1d3. If the dice returns a 3, I roll 1d3-1 for the opposing team's score. If the dice returns a 2, then I roll a 1d2-1 for the opposing team's score. If the dice returns a 1, then the other team just didn't score anything. If a team won all ten of their coin-flips, then I roll a 1d4 instead of a 1d3 for the score. If the teams tied, then I just roll a 1d3.

I presume you're referring to the Chosen-Wales game? Yeah, that was a smashing victory. And Germany definitely went and cleaned the clock of all their immediate rivals - will be interesting to see how they fare in the rest.

I've not run the numbers for the rest of the Cup just yet.

Gahhh, Mexico got stuck in the group of death, but at least beat Chile! *thumbs nose at Brock* :P I see Iberia and Italy also failed to make it out. Group E was weird.

The Australians are frankly quite shocked that they made it out.

Yeah, Group E *was* rather weird. Nobody really dominated, and even the victors showed some weakness with all the ties.

Hmm. Germany did not dominate as it did in the first round, but we are still in the game.

Looking forward to the next round!

Hmm. That makes an interesting set to play the next round - Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, the United States, Australia, Argentina, Indochina and Chosen.

The performance of the Chosen team is perhaps the most surprising, next to the Indochinese victory over France...

Good stuff!
