Are you sure you want to use all your CDS tonnage in one go?

3

Monday, October 4th 2004, 2:24am

Yeah.

They're needed pretty quick to guard locations in the Med and Red Sea, because the 2 BBs France has in the Med can't be everywhere. Beruit will get one, Tunis two, Djibuti one, and Marseilles one. They're really just supplimentary coast artillery for a locale, but they represent a mobile threat, just strong enough to have to be taken into account, to complicate the planning of any offensive action near where they're based.

Djibuti one

Interesting to compare Petain with Panabo...

Panabo has the speed to disengage, and probably a (gun) range advantage as well...do you have the stats for Petain's guns?

5

Monday, October 4th 2004, 3:12am

Go ahead and disengage...

As long as Panabo stays away from Djibuti, Beruit, Tunis, and Marseilles, she can use her speed advantage any way she wants. ;)

MN Petain packs the same 12"/45 that arms the Courbet class, the first French Dreadnought battleships. They get out past 30,000m, which is a lot further than anyone has managed to hit at:

305mm/45

Caliber = 30.5 cm (12.0 inch)

Hmmmm....

Petain: 12"/45, 925lb/1.0 shell; 35,542 yards @ 46.1°

Panabo: 12"/55, 952lb/0.97 shell; 42,600 yards @ 47.4°

Assuming both ships' mounts are limited to 35°:

Petain: 33,700 yards; 5.77" belt, 6.71" deck

Panabo: 39,700 yards; 5.68" belt, 7.25" deck.

Note to self: Drill the gunnery men of the Marina de Filipinas to score hits at 35,000 yards. ;)

Monday, October 4th 2004, 3:50am

That's hits on a 120mx23m target @ 35000yds...

And what happens when you do hit?

Lets look at the immune zones:

Petain - Immune to Penabo between 14,600m and 29,725m

Penabo - Immune to Petain between 18,500m and 22,550m.

I don't mind these circumstances, at all.

That's the problem you get into with really high-velocity guns - you can't penetrate decks within realistic battle ranges.

Oh, and MN Petain et al are a "steady gun platform"...

Interesting and powerful design - I just wonder if you can really put that many guns on such a small hull. Those two big turrets will eat up a lot of your deckspace and the necessity to keep other things out of harms way (gunblast anyone?) will make it very difficult to find a layout for all the other guns that offers decent fire arcs.

And then there has to be a large tripod or conning tower as well...

Can you provide a drawing?

Drawings have a nasty habit of ruining your fun!!

Seriously though they do help create the perfect warship.

When you compare her to HMS Roberts or Abercrombie, I can see your point.

Here's a quickie top view

The picture's here.

The guns, airplane, crane, and even a couple of boats all seem to fit.

It ain't pretty, but I'm a single dad this week - wife's at a convention. My flurry of posts Sunday was getting them in while I still had time :)

What would really help would be a template with all your objects to the same scale, some of those parts seem to be slightly out of scale.

Scale

I'll work on that.

Gambetta class aircraft carrier

The experimental aircraft carriers Normandie and Languedoc have given the Marine Nationale good experience in the operation of aircraft carriers since their completion. However, they are slow for carrier operations, have insufficient range for the requirements of the French fleet, and carry what the French Navy Staff consider an inadequate antiaircraft battery. Finally, they consume almost 75 percent of France's allowed aircraft carrier tonnage to provide a total of 80 carrier aircraft.

The first stage in replacing the Normandie class aircraft carriers was the construction of MN Clemenceau, which will be completed at the end of 1924. The second stage will be the construction of MN Gambetta, which will begin in January, 1925. Upon MN Clemenceau finishing sea trials, MN Normandie will be removed from service. Upon MN Gambetta finishing sea trials, MN Languedoc will be removed from service:
