It is but I think he was probably thinking about the same system as the one used aboard other warships to launch floatplanes (hydraulic, right?).

Carrier catapaults of the day were hydraulic, I think, while the floatplane cats were either hydraulic or black powder.

With US battleships, the ones on the fantail were "A" types, or powered by compressed air. Turret mounts were "B" type, black powder. There was also a fly-wheel type installed on Lexington and Saratoga, but the clutch kept burning out. Hydraulic catapults were introduced in the mid-30's on Yorktown, and the first steam catapults were built in 1945.

20 years experimentation just to get a gun that points upwards? I'd cancel the contract with MYA and get someone else who knows something about guns. :)

AAAAAAAAAAh doh! I meant 10!!

Oh well edit time.

You see it just happened to be one of MYA's 130mm guns that caused the explosion that killed king Gustav V. MYA learnt they're lessons the hard way. Nordmarks 100mm DP gun is also made by MYA, it has taken a long time to develop suitable improvements on the original gun & mount.
