THE SOUTH AFRICAN TELEGRAPH
12th June 1923

Durban. Today a delegation of the Indian Navy arrived at Durban. The town will be once again their homeport for the duration of this years Joint Naval Operations and the Indian Ocean Symphosium. This year operations will focus on submarine warfare, accourding to reporter Nick Quick the Indians have a growing interest in this field, while the Symphosium talks will focus on the Cleito Treaties´ influence on naval building programs. A representative of the Royal South African Navy told Mr. Quick “The Cleito Treaty is based on a good idea – to avoid a new arms race. However, in hindsight some things should have been handled differently. The treaty came into existance two years ago but as we can see everywhere there are new vessels of war laid down every second day. The limits are not tight enough and naval funds still too high. It is time to discuss this matter and maybe we need a second treaty helping us to fix the first one.”

Cape Town. The delegations of the South African Railways and the Nederlandse Kongo Spoorwegen met in Cape Town yesterday for their annual meeting to discuss matters regarding the Transafrican Railway. In general this huge project is making good progress, but parts of it are still in a planning phase, problems regarding particular sections of the line still not solved.
