German News and Events - Q3, 1937

July 6, 1937 - Meppen

Two new long-range cannon for the Heer were rolled out for testing today, a 17.3cm and a 10.5cm gun. Both are intended for long-range fire and both show a resemblance to the current 15cm weapon. The 10cm gun is very similar to a downsized version of the 15cm weapon, differing visually mostly in it's size and the gunshield with which it is provided (the 15cm cannon does not have a gun shield). The 17cm gun has a similar appearance to the 15cm weapon, but it is very different in detail. Most of these differences are due to the gun being mounted on the carriage of the 21cm howitzer.

July 12, 1937 - Grafenwohr

An improved prototype of the proposed 10.5cm self-propelled howitzer on a modified Panzer II chassis (the extended 4.8m chassis) was delivered for testing. The extended chassis gives the vehicle more room in the fighting compartment, and shifting the engine to the middle of the vehicle has allowed the gun to be mounted lower and for a lower profile in general.

July 20, 1937 - Berlin

The German government first heard of the results of the Battle of Ilo, followed by the statement of the US government and reports that the USN was making preparations to sail. "This could too easily spread....." thought Foreign Minister Stressemann. "Perhaps the League....."

The German government released a statement on the recent events in South America. "The German government is saddened to hear that the attempt by our friends the British to mediate a peaceful settlement between Peru and Colombia has failed, and now we hear of a naval battle between Chile and Peru. What was a confrontation over a small city in the jungles has now spread to the high seas, and may yet spread further. Therefore, the German government proposes a cease-fire in place to begin at 0000 GMT on June 22, with the dispute to be presented to the League of Nations or the International Court of Arbitration."

OOC: thanks, I can use that! :)

IC: In the opinion of the Chilean government, the Diaz regime has used Colombia's willingness to negotiate peacefully as a means to consolidate his control over Leticia. Chile is nevertheless willing to agree to a ceasefire IF the Peruvian government provides assurances it intends to negotiate in good faith.

July 22, 1937 - Bremen

First flight of the BMW-801D powered Fw-190 V12 prototype fighter, with Hans Sander at the controls. This flight lasted approximately 2.5 hours, longer than most, which may indicate that BMW is finally making progress on the cooling problems the engine has suffered during it's development.

July 24, 1937 - Berlin

The Luftwaffe has decided to go with the 20 x 96mm cartridge in the 20mm cannon development program, allowing Mauser to focus it's work on the cannon for that cartridge.

[This is a blown-out but not shortened version of the MG-151s 15 x 96mm cartridge, giving its 117 gram API & 115 gram HET projectiles a velocity of 830 m/s. HE(M) projectiles, not yet developed, would be faster because of their lighter weight, 92 grams at 920 m/s. The weight of the cannon, however, will be a bit higher than the weight of the historical MG-151/20 at about 48 kg.]

This is a blown-out but not shortened version of the MG-151s 15 x 96mm cartridge, giving its 205 gram API & HET projectiles a velocity of 830 m/s. HE(M) projectiles, not yet developed, would be faster because of their lighter weight, 183 grams at 920 m/s.

Those are the cartridge weights rather than the projectile weights. 117 / 115 / 92g for API/HET/HE(M). There isn't a great increase in power from the historical MG 151/20 but the interchangeable nature and the fairly light weight are lost.

Corrected the weights. 6 kilos is regarded as an acceptable trade for a 15% increase in muzzle velocity.

Probably a drop in rate of fire to 650-700rpm because of the longer overall cartridge length as well. I think simply the commonality with the MG-151 is worth it. As a different weapon, what designation? MK-102?

Designation would probably be MG-201, definitely not MK- since 20mm weapons were regarded by the Luftwaffe as machineguns, not cannon.

August 5th, 1937 - Berlin

After discussions within the government, the German government has announced that it is recognizing the Peruvian Congress and it's President, Orlando Baylon, as the rightful government of Peru. The next shipment of arms destined for Peru (Peru ordered some Pz IIIs just before Howard left) will be delivered to a port controlled by the Peruvian Congress, so as to avoid giving them into the hands of the dictator styling himself as President.

Tiny correction, should be Orlando Baylon, not Gustavo Baylon.

Trujillo or any of the other NW Peruvian ports will be the main Congressionalist ports at the moment. ((OOC: Mollendo will probably be in Congressionalist hands by the end of August as well, but that's not as accessible to German deliveries.))

A contract has been let to fulfil a long-standing dream: a canal connect the Rhine and the Danube rivers. Once completed, this canal will allow the unhindered passage of vessels and their cargoes from the cities and ports along the Rhein all the way to the Black Sea.

There was already a Rhine-Danube canal, the Lugwig Canal from the 1800s. It just was too small and slow to compete with the railroads. Doubt it would be functional in 1937, but it still exists :)

The shortage of water in the highest areas, and the large number and small size of the locks, makes that one replaceable. But yeah, I'd misread the Wiki article, I remembered it as saying the canal was started but not completed, like the 1917/1921 plans.

What length/beam/draft/height ratios are going to be involved in this project?

Bulgaria and Romania are building a road-rail bridge over the Danube (Giurgiu-Rousse Friendship Bridge) with 30m overhead clearance; so I hope you're not planning to run anything taller up the Danube...

16

The plan is for 190m locks, up to 11.5m wide, with a rated depth of 4m. So I doubt that there will be much cruising through the canal that will have a problem with the railroad bridge (that's not to say that some of the shipping downstream from the canal might not, of course). Approximately the same as the current canal.

Probably should nag the Yugos and Hungarians to check their bridges, too. Romania and Bulgaria, SFAIK, only have that one bridge under construction.

Once the Yugoslav War is over, we could even work on the Iron Gates Dam. That'd really help navigation on the river, but it'd have the side effect of flooding out the awesome little town of Ada Kaleh...

Well, you need to make it a swing bridge, then, obviously. :)

It's actually the historical truss bridge, started two decades ahead of schedule.

August 19, 1937 - Berlin

The long-time Foreign Minister, Gustav Stressemann, has announced his retirement. "I have, at least, decided to retire from public life. It is time, while I still have my health, to sit back and enjoy life. I am happy to have spent the last decade and a half in the service of the Reich and it's people, but eventually a man must know his limits." The Foreign Ministry has announced that the Foreign Minister expects to step down at the end of next month.

August 23, 1937 - Berlin

The long-time coalition government that has governed Germany since 1933 has fallen. Disagreements between the DDP, DZP, and the coalition-leading DNVP, brought to a head by Foreign Minister Stressemann's impending retirement, caused the coalition to collapse. President Eckener has given Chancellor Jarres a chance to re-form a coalition that will govern until next years scheduled elections, but observers are undecided on his chances.
