Overview: The Flota de Alta Mar represents the main striking power of the Chilean Navy. Traditionally it has been divided between the gun-oriented Battle Force and the aviation-oriented Fast Carrier Force, with resources divided between the two units according to necessity. Increasingly, there is a blurring of the lines between the two units so that they may be regarded as two alternative task forces within the Flota de Alta Mar.

Overview: The Flota de Litoral is responsible for the patrol of Chilean coastal waters for the purposes of maritime security and policing. It is divided into four administrative zones of roughly equivalent strengths (although the Third Naval Zone, based in Punta Arenas, substitutes ocean patrol ships for light craft). The Naval Zones also maintain a number of search and patrol aircraft.
