Technical Description
Low-wing cantilever monoplane. Centre-section built integral with the fuselage and set at a coarse anhedral. Outer wing panels, tapering in chord and thickness set at a coarse dihedral. Two-spar structure with closely-spaced ribs and stressed skin metal covering. Entire trailing edge of wings and centre section hinged on Junkers ‘double wing’ principle, outer portions acting as ailerons and inner portions acting as landing flaps. Diving brakes are fitted beneath front spars and outboard of landing gear legs. They are hinged clear of the undersurface of the wings and in normal flight are edge-on to the airstream. For dive attack they are turned through ninety degrees to present a flat plate area to airflow.
Fuselage is an oval section structure of light metal construction. Made in two halves and joined on the centre line. The smooth metal skin is riveted to ‘Z’ section frames and open section stringers. The two halves of the fuselage are joined by two internal angles riveted together.
Braced monoplane type tail unit. Junkers ‘double wing’ tailplane and elevators. Tailplane braced below to fuselage. Cantilever fin and rudder. All metal structure with smooth sheet covering. Trimming tabs in movable surfaces.
Fixed divided-type undercarriage. Each unit incorporates oleo-pneumatic suspension, with legs attached to extremities. Legs enclosed in streamlined casings. Orientable tail wheel. Undercarriage may be jettisoned in an emergency.
Two Junkers Jumo 211J twelve-cylinder inverted Vee-type liquid cooled engines each rated at 1,200 hp for takeoff and 1,100 hp at 4,000 metres. Three-bladed airscrew. Two coolant radiators beneath centre-section, one on each side of fuselage. Fuel tanks in wings have a capacity of 770 litres. Two 300 litre auxiliary fuel tanks can be fitted beneath wings.
Provision for pilot and air gunner in tandem seats over wing and covered by continuous canopy with hinged and sliding sections. Two 15mm MG 151 machineguns with 225 rounds per gun in wings on either side of the fuselage outside area swept by the airscrew, and two 7.92mm MG81 with 225 rounds per gun on flexible mount in the rear cockpit. Crutch beneath central fuselage can carry a single bomb of 500 kg or a bomb carrier for up to 250 kg of ordnance may be carried beneath each wing.
Span 13.8 metres; Length 11.13 metres; Height 3.9 metres. Wing area 31 square metres. Normal flying weight 5,720 kg. Maximum permissible take-off load 6,585 kg.
Maximum speed 408 kph at 4,100 metres. Climb to 4,575 metres 19 minutes. Service ceiling at mean weight 7,320 metres. Range with maximum ordnance 1,000 kilometres.
