Il Mundo Q2/28 II

The recent annoucement on the curtailing of naval construction from the
newly-elected government has caused an outcry amongst the public.
Speakers have told of large scale unemployment and economic ruin in the
few years ahead. They cite the government's lack of awareness of the
growing security problem in the Adriatic and Aegeanas a cause to
continue shipbuilding. The oulying provinces of Trieste and Dalmatia are
those that depend most on shipbuilding, and it is those people that the
government must appease to stay in power. The construction of PEdS in
Trieste will sustain thousands of jobs in the region.

The government's reply was to say that they had only suspended
construction whilst they temporarily review the needs of the navy. They
assured the people of Trieste that major units would be built there in
the near future, exactly what those units would be, they couldn't say at
this time. They promised long-term expansion of industry in the Romagna
eastwards.

Critics were more sceptical. A particulary vocal Mussolini delivered
some involving speaches in Dubronovik and Trieste. He saluted the
conservatives for wanting low tax and high growth, but expressed his
concerns over security. Again mentioning the Greeks, Mussolini seemed to
enjoy wide scale support. Asking local people for opinions" He is
amazing. I would follow him anywhere. Its a pity he lost the election
though."

The government announced that they also wanted to retain a powerful
navy, just that they wanted to do this as cheaply as possible. They said
that they were exploring a multitude of options of differing costs and
performances. Early indications are for ships favouring aircraft and
torpedoes. Both are inexpensive, torpedoes being an equaliser against
large ships as the best way to sink something. Aircraft will provide
eyes in the sky to better use the limited resources. The ability to
concentrate overwhelming force at one point. Balbo, Minister for
Aviation says that he can already do that, if only someone gives him the
chance. He was given his chance by Ianucci, tasked with planning a
series of long range flights to the Americas by either southern or
northern route. Balbo hopes to complete his flight this summer.
