As the RSAN's Q4 report is published, the Naval Gazette will hold an article that provides some more details:

With Q4/42 the RSAN's second class of heavy cruisers, the Cape Infante class, enters the yards for life extension and refit. A new secondary/AA battery will be installed including rearrangement of parts of the superstructure and all torpedos removed. The magazines formerly used to store torpedo warheads will be used to increase the number of main gun shells slightly (+20 per barrel). Modifications to armor are limited to the removal of the light CT armor. Overall, the modifications will buy enough space and weight to increase misc weight by 25 tons, allowing the installation of the latest RFC and radar equipment. The machinery department will only get a major overhault but no new boilers or turbines will be installed. Speed and range remain the same. Finally, the ships forward stem is raised by 20cm due to additional plates attached to the bow in order to decrease the water taken over in heavy seas.

Very interesting. I've not seen prior comments about RSAN ships possessing radar; I presume this one of the first South African sets to go to sea. Was it acquired from the Dutch or Indians, or developed locally?

Radar on RSAN units is nothing new. I remember to have it mentioned before. It is a domestic development, initiated by some accidental results with point-to-point radio (see my news as of 22-May-34 and 26-September-34 for example). You may also check drawings to see older modifications included radar too.

Despite domestic developments, there also has been support from the Dutch for all kind of thinks, including electronics, remote fire control, Hazemeyer mounts etc.

Ah. I wasn't here when 1934 news came out, so I didn't recall that. I've primarily been looking at encyclopedia posts, which haven't made mention of it at all; so I made some assumptions and a conclusion.

Since the encyclopedia doesn't list them, which RSAN units have radar already installed?

The RSAN fields all kind of radars that are required to be en par with the other big navies.

Yes, but which ships have them installed?

Sorry, I have no list at hand. But I expect all units DD size up that have been newly built, refitted or rebuilt since 1939 to have some kind of radar aboard. Some larger units had them earlier most likely. RSAN units smaller than DDs size received theirs later en mass. By 1942 no units newly built, refitted or rebuilt will leave the yards without radar.

How advanced the sets installed are depends on the individual unit or class.

I was just a bit skittish when you implied that so many RSAN units had radar, particularly as there has never been any specific mention in the encyclopedia of any South African ships having such capabilities, and which ships had radar. I know you're pretty busy with moving, but would it be possible at some future point for the classes with radar to have some remark to that affect in the encyclopedia? :)

I doubt I will spend much time on the issue and I am not interested in becoming a radar expert, but my drawings are a pretty good indicator. But don't take for granted there is no radar just because I missed such a tiny detail during the drawing process.

You don't need to become an expert on radar to note on a Springsharp that it's present. But I'll have a look at your drawings and see if I can't compile a list of what ships have them.

Whatever fits your needs..... *shrug*

For myself I will define the details when I need them.

With airplanes and land forces, that's fine. But I'm not so fine with refusing to provide such critical details of a warship's design as which ones have radar. Shin and I have rapped players' knuckles before for sloppy and incomplete Springsharps and encyclopedias, and I think we administrators should set a good example for the rest of the players. We all know as players that radar adds quite a lot of capability to a warship, and so I think our fellow players deserve to know that an RSAN ship has a radar set - even if the specifics remain undefined.

I myself try to provide as much information as possible; one of my college professors called it the "truck principle". If I step out of my house tomorrow and get killed by a truck, then is the person who comes along after me going to be able to figure out what I did?
