The Bulgarski Orel

Another foray into the world of sail-training ships, the Bylgarski Orel or "Bulgarian Eagle". This ship is based on the "Flying P-Liners", and when complete should resemble the Russian Kruzenshtern.

on side, all amidships
Weight of broadside 43 lbs / 19 kg
Shells per gun, main battery: 150
2 - 21.0" / 533.4 mm above water torpedoes

Propulsion:
3,400 m² (36,600 sq ft) of sail on four masts = 17 knots in proper conditions
Diesel Internal combustion motors,
Geared drive, 1 shaft, 1,659 shp / 1,238 Kw = 12.00 kts

£1.008 million / $4.030 million

Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
Armament: 5 tons, 0.1 %
Machinery: 44 tons, 0.9 %
Hull, fittings & equipment: 4,353 tons, 92.6 %
Fuel, ammunition & stores: 207 tons, 4.4 %
Miscellaneous weights: 90 tons, 1.9 %

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
56,724 lbs / 25,730 Kg = 2,728.1 x 3.5 " / 88 mm shells or 24.0 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.10
Metacentric height 1.9 ft / 0.6 m
Roll period: 14.1 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 64 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.01
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.53

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has a flush deck
Block coefficient: 0.427
Length to Beam Ratio: 8.16 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 19.37 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 20 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 42
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 0.00 degrees
Stern overhang: 0.00 ft / 0.00 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 21.33 ft / 6.50 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 13.55 ft / 4.13 m
- Mid (50 %): 13.55 ft / 4.13 m

- Average freeboard: 14.17 ft / 4.32 m

Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 8.0 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 86.2 %
Waterplane Area: 10,268 Square feet or 954 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 1,000 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 229 lbs/sq ft or 1,120 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 3.36
- Longitudinal: 7.44
- Overall: 3.64
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is excellent
Room for accommodation and workspaces is cramped
Excellent seaboat, comfortable, can fire her guns in the heaviest weather

Barque-rigged, similar to "Flying P-Liner" type vessels.

The Bylgarski Orel is a lot larger than her predecessor Bylgarski Lav. Again, the reason is "just because!" The guns are meant to keep away pirates. ;)
