The national holiday of Anthesteria kicked off today and all Atlantians across the nation began celibrations with the "opening of the casks", more commonly known as Pithoigia which takes place on the first day of the holidays. On the second day of Anthesteria, named Choes (feast of beakers), will be a time of merrymaking and for some a time of much drinking! Drinking clubs meet to drink off matches, the winner being he who drained his cup most rapidly. In achient times flour and honey were sacrificed in the various volcano's and earthquake fissures on the continent.
Anthesteria is also celebrated in Greece but the main difference between the two nations way of celibrating is based on the fact that the Greeks pay tribute to Dionysus the god of wine, while the Atlantean version of the Holiday comemorates the "great deluge" that ended the bronze age and forced Deucalion and Pyrra to flee to Greece to escape the deluge. In addition to this holiday Deucalion and Pyrra are also honoured on Friday the 13th which is the date commonly known as the day the great deluge occured.
The name Anthesteria comes from the Greek name of Anthesterion which is the month of late February/early March. Several chants to honour the dead will also be spoken aloud across the Nation, the most popular being:
Every Soul
Deathless Gods
Live Within Every Soul
Sacred Is Their Gift
Blessed Are We
The chants are ment to ward off the Keres, daughters of Erebus and Nyx. They are black, winged spirits of death and doom, vengeful spirits of the dead. During the festival known as Anthesteria, the Keres are driven away.
The holiday ends on March 12 when it is beleaved that Deucalion and Pyrra arrived in Greece
