The Strange Case of Ignacy Domeyko

One of the things Chile has planned but never budgeted for is the refit of the ex-Filipino Antarctic ship Ignacy Domeyko (ex-Pacifica). In Chilean service, the ship's role is to participate in the ARC (Antarctic Research Consortium), as well as to undertake ocean patrols in the Drake Passage (and other associated bodies of water).

As with most foreign-purchased ships, there are some tweaks that need to be made if the ship is to remain in Chilean service. The biggest of these is the armament, which is... motley. (Original sim here). There are five different types of guns, many of them quite old, ridiculous, or not used in Chilean service.

In Alternative One, the twin 6" gun aft shall be retained (and perhaps the cost will stay at 15%), but will get a thicker barrel liner to match the 150mm shells Chile uses. The collection of 100mm, 57mm, 25mm, and 13.7mm guns will all be replaced with 75mm DP/AA guns in enclosed mounts: two forward (one of them superfiring) and one aft, superfiring over the 15cm twin turret. Along with that, the ship will receive new gear, including electronics for patrol and expedition work.

In Alternative Two, all armament is removed and dumped, and four twin 130mm guns are placed aboard. I'm not sure this alternative is really all that cost-effective, because I'd have to pay 2,038t to do that work.

I am slightly confused - in the explanatory narrative you indicate that Alternative Two would involve four twin 130mm mounts; the sim shows four twin 120mm mounts. ;)
