Marinkuriren January 12th 1921: Navy commissions new destroyers

Navy commissions new destroyers
On January 11th the two new destroyers Urho Saanio and Torstein Arctander were commissioned into the Royal Nordmark Navy, heralding new advances in the destroyer-force of the Navy. Present at the commissioning was Vice-Admiral Løvdahl, and several members of the naval design-staff.

As remarked by Vice-Admiral Løvdahl in a short speech, the new destroyers are particularly remarkable for carrying their main armament in enclosed twin turrets capable of elevating the guns to sufficiently high angles that aeroplanes may be shot down even when close by the fleet.

In most other parameters, these destroyers follow in the path of the Sinklar-class destroyers from 1918, whose main-armament is in open shields capable of no more than 55 degrees of elevation. The gathering of the armament in two twin turrets rather than four single mounts has had beneficial effects on the availability of deckspace, as well as the availability of internal volume.
