Petrograd: Morskoi Sbornik 25/7/21

As economy of Russia and World continues to expand, especially in the automotive industry, demand for petroleum is growing, to limits that cannot yet be seen. Russian railroad system, despite investments since ending of Great War, cannot supply sufficient of Baku's output to Russian seaports. Russia is blessed with wide, slow rivers, but Volga does not access export ports.

To rectify this, work has commenced on canal to connect Don and Volga Rivers south of Tsarytsin. As planned, it will have depth of 8 meters and width of 90. Length of canal will be 80km, and canal will support 2-way traffic. Construction is being undertaken by work force of 40,000, and is expected to require five years to shift estimated 70 million cubic meters of earth.

Studies for canal system to connect Gulf of Finland and White Sea are also underway.

To ensure secure supply of ever-increasing demand for oil, exploration is underway on promising areas of the Ural Mountains near city of Perm. Transport of oil from Ural region would utilize Kama River.

To sail on new routes, Russian commercial shipbuilding companies will offer following ships for service on Caspian Sea and on Russia's internal waterways:

Oil Barge, laid down 1927

Length, 120.0 m x Beam, 28.0 m x Depth, 2.3 m
6233 tonnes normal displacement (5789 tonnes standard)

Main battery: 2 x 1.3-cm

Weight of broadside: 0 kg

Hull unarmored

Cargo - 3,000 metric tons. 6,470 GRT

Maximum speed for 3451 shaft kw = 14.00 knots
Approximate cruising radius, 8000 nm / 10 knots

Typical complement: 35-46

Estimated cost, $3.181 million (£795,000)

Remarks:

Magazines and engineering spaces are roomy, with superior
watertight subdivision.

Ship is roomy, with superior accommodation and working space.
