Irish Ships, 1944

At the present time, there's only going to be one new ship design built in 1944: the first two Deirdre class ships. These will eventually replace the four Connacht class destroyers. The design goal was to construct a ship armed with the new British 4.5" dual guns, a seaworthy hull, and a large and economic cruising radius.

The size of the ships was set high because of the failure of the 1940 Contae II class destroyers, which featured approximately the same armament (6x4.5" guns) on over 1,200 tons less displacement.

An interesting design, and certainly a big step up in destroyer design for the Irish Naval Service.

I am somewhat surprised by the bulges on a ship of this side though. Any particular reason?

Also, I realize that the radius at cruise speed is a driver of the bunkers at max - some might question the percentage of fuel and stores - but the INS seems to prefer its ships to have long legs.

The Irish anticipate that if they are ever involved in a proper shooting war, then Britain will similarly be fighting; and the Irish objective is to help ensure the safety of international maritime traffic through the Western Approaches, through convoys and patrols. Thus it's not really "range" that's invoked by the large bunkerage, but at-sea endurance. In translation, the Deirdres will be able to stay at sea, operating at high squadron speed (18 knots), for over two weeks without requiring refueling.

Alternately, there is some anticipation that many of the ocean liners currently in use would, in such a situation, end up used as high-speed troopships. In this case, the Deirdres could rendezvous with a liner and escort it at 34 knots for a much longer period than a ship with less available bunkerage.

Seems like overkill to me. American destroyers of this era had considerably less bunkerage, and they were tasked with running around with carrier groups all the time.

The US Navy also had the largest fleet of tankers for underway replenishment, and the most highly-developed at-sea refueling systems, of any naval force during the period. (The USN destroyers could also tank up from the carriers or battleships, in a pinch.) Ireland does not have a fleet of tankers suitable for this purpose.

I admit it's probably a wee bit excessive, though.

Maybe I can trim some of the range, upgrade the size and firepower, and give her some different guns... Not currently in the arsenal, and a departure from previous Irish designs, but maybe...

Not at the present time, no.

Perhaps something like this:

Breakdown of Miscellaneous Weights:
- 25 tons for the best Sligo rags
- 25 tons for barrels of stones
- 30 tons for sides of old blind horses hides
- 20 tons for barrels of bones.
- 25 tons for hogs
- 30 tons for dogs
- 20 tons for barrels of porter
- 25 tons for bails of old nanny gold tails

The most recent iteration of RCN 5.5" guns are mount & hoist, not full turret/barbette mountings, and I generally allocate 10 tons per turret in misc weight to account for their peculiarities.

Is there a reason why the newest Irish destroyers have 5/38s, while the other Irish ships have 4.5" or 5.12" guns? Seems like an unnecessary logistical complication.

It would only be a complication if I intended to have all three in service at once. Only one ship carried 130mm and it was replaced quickly; and the 4.5" armed ships are scheduled for sale in 1945ish.

It was re-armed with 4.5" to match the rest of the ships in the class.
