Chinese Naval Planning

The 1944er Naval Planning has four points:
  • Scrapping of the overaged HICMS Kasuga (refit is senseless cause of the age of the vessel)
  • New CA sub-class (advanced Zunyi-Class). These is will be the replacement of the HICMS Kasuga
  • New Class of light cruiser - replacement of Wenshan Class, if they will be sold instead of refitted
  • New Class of Minesweepers Motherships

Mine Sweeper Mothership

The chinese navy called for two large mine warfare support ships, called Mine sweeping ships or Mine sweeper mothership. They would transport a small force of smaller minesweeping ships to minefields and support them in their work.
The new ships were 136m long, had a displacement of 6,000t, and four diesel engines four a top speed of 20,5kn with a very slim superstrcuture. The armament consisted of six 105mm Flaks in enclosed twin turrets, four 37mm twins and three 20mm twins. The boats were carried below deck and could be released with the help of a back ramp and crane. They would be lifted back onto the upper deck after their work was done and moved back below deck with a ramp. An aircraft catapult and hangar was included as well, it would probably be used as a rescue craft should a vessel be lost in inaccessable waters.
There were two variants of boat complements: The first one had 12 boats with remote minesweeping gear, 4 tug boats, 3 buoy boats and 1 leader boat, the second one consisted of 10 small minesweepers (KR-boats), 6 buoy boats and 1 leader boat.

Im curious as to the rational behind the big Minesweeper tender. I dont quite follow why such an expensive ship is necessary.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

China didn't build sometimes rational ;) .... the Chinese Leadership love strange looking vessels.

Could I see the sims for the small fry?

Wednesday, October 30th 2013, 8:54am

Hi Rocky,

it's very hard to find OTL sim for the small fry. I found only the following stats:

small MSB (Minesweeping Boat):
Tonnage: 13,3 tons
Length: 13,5m o.a. / 13m wl
Width: 3,48m
Draught: 0,9m
Freeboard: 2,35m
Engine: 2x 6cyl diesel 150 hp / 12 kn / 2 shafts
Range: 175 sm / 12 kn

Surely the catapult on the drawing is too small to launch a seaplane?

Also, the Siachuan Class has;

Quoted

6 - 4,13" / 105 mm guns (3x2 guns), 35,32lbs / 16,02kg shells, 1940 Model
Dual purpose guns in deck mounts with hoists
on centreline,

I assume these are actually an X mount and two side mounts. Probably best simmed as side mounts.

On the Advanced Zunyi you're using 119mm, while on the other ships, you're using 105mm. Probably should make them all 105mm.

Speaking objectively... ;)

Would it not make sense for this vessel to share similar armament with China's destroyers? IIRC, they are armed with 127mm DP guns, as opposed to the 120mm LA guns you have simmed here.

Secondly, is this a minelayer or some sort of ASW vessel? If the former, carrying hydrophones and ASW hear would interfere with minelaying (the racks for the DCs would compete with the mine rails aft). If the latter, she is rather slow.

Thanks for the points ....

Of course a common calibre makes sense and will be considered.

The minelayer is planed as flotilla leader for the Huangshi-Vessels.So the ASW equipment isn't essential equipment, but why do you think the DCs would compete with the mine rails aft ? The DC mortars could be placed in the midshiparea on the side.

Why do you think more speed is needed ? These vessels won't accompany convoys or warships, so the high speed after hunting a sub to come back to the convoy isn't needed.

Out of curiousity - are Chinese plans changing due to the war? Any new priorities being identified?

The plan was made before the war started, but till now there is no need for changing identified, because no naval battle happened till now. Btw i have noticed that i urgently have to publish my sim-reports for 44 !!!! Ash on my head !!!

No major battles, no, but you've had some fun with submarine warfare and an amphibious landing...

Yes, that's why the amphibious forces are still growing in the present building plan (not the published above) also the subforce gets new vessels
