Le Terrible and Gallant rebuilds

I was not originally intending to rebuild France's two 1920s-era destroyer classes, the Gallant (1926) and Le Terrible (1929). My belief was that the ships were too small and too lightly-armed to serve as a viable hull for rebuilding. However, I do have a bit of money which could be used for some refits, so I had a go at simming a rebuild. At present, these vessels serve as escorts for the French Pacific Fleet, though I see this as a bit of a stretch for their capabilities (range and seakeeping in particular). As new Sabre class destroyers join the fleet, the Gallants and Le Terribles might be shuffled back to the Med to replace the even older Audaciaux class.

I decided I was not willing to spend more than 350 tons apiece on any rebuild, but that still provided some leeway for new engines, as well as updated guns and some basic radar. As both classes share some similarities, so too do my rebuilds. I added miscellaneous weight to account for radar and switched the three DP single 120mm guns over to twin 100mm DP. All the old 40mm guns were updated though the positions remained the same. Speed dropped by half a knot with the new engines.

I am considering the possibility of dropping the third turret if it would allow me the opportunity to install hoist mounts for the 100mm guns.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I believe that to introduce a mount-and-hoist in place of a deck mount would involve a significant amount of re-arrangement of space below decks.

The question in my mind would revolve around the interpretation of rule 2.2.3 for Level 3 Refits - "Alterations to guns of 66mm-195mm not involving barbette alterations" versus rule 2.2.4 for Level 4 Refits - "Alterations to guns of 66mm-195mm involving barbette alterations". I realize that the designs in question do not have barbettes, but neither do they have hoists at present.

I'd defer to the opinoin of some of the older hands here.

The rules as written are nebulous on the direct question of replacing mounts with a mount-with-hoist. Something to add to the list of future clarifications and corrections?

I've been thinking that we need to do some miscellaneous clean-up work to clarify some of the shipbuilding rules and plug some of the small gaps we've found through experience and misadventure. Another good excuse to do that...

I don't much like refitting destroyers in peacetime myself, though that being said I am refitting Romania's. I can see why France might want to do so, but I would weigh the cost of building new ones versus refitting the old ones.

I've only refitted destroyers that have decent speed and even then only in small numbers.

With the two refits posted up top, it looks to be approximately 5859 tons for all eighteen ships. As my current destroyer is 2,100 tons, I could refit these eighteen DDs for a bit less than I'd spend on three Sabres. If I decided to go for the refits, I'd likely schedule two or three per quarter, spreading the cost out over two years or so.

I've always assumed that "Alterations to guns of 66mm-195mm involving barbette alterations" applied to hoists too (logically as how many 66mm guns have turret and barbette set-ups?).
I always assumed that it not only meant adding armour to barbettes but also widening and replacement of hoists and equipment inside them and the fact of internal changes below decks.

I agree with Brock's philosophy in refitting older DDs although personally I'm not refitting anything older than 1930. That allows a useful extention of life for new tasks for little additonal cost.

If France wants a new 57mm gun then Vickers will be happy to sell a modifed 6pdr 57mm DP gun as used by the RN. We can make some mount mods to iron out the few bugs remaining.
