Canada, Eh? Q2-3/34

Q2 and early Q3 summary;

The recently formed Canadian Armament Development and Research Establishment (CADRE) has several projects publicly listed due to funding requests in parliment. Dozens of projects of various sizes are listed, but the most prominent (and netting the lion's share of funding) are labeled JUNO (at Shinra Munitions), SKIMMER (at Avro Canada), and CAYUGA (at Orenda Engines).

Canada will be attending the upcoming San Francisco conferance, with Foreign Minister Louis St. Laurent, Naval Minister Admiral "Buck" Frobisher, and Commodore Robert April schedule to arrive aboard HMCS Pegasus.

Continued reports of raids and attempted raids in the Carribean. Most of these have been small tramp steamers, with the notable exception of White Star Liner RMS Delphic. Delphic was not seized, but was raided for cargo and supplies on a Halifax-Australia-Hong Kong run.

the RCN has announced it's intent to purchase a number of submarines from British shipyards. The exact details (including how many subs) have not been disclosed at this time.

On March 16th, "Yard #844" was christened Oceanic and launched with great fanfare at Harland & Wolff in Belfast. Oceanic is scheduled to be completed within a year, with her maiden voyage tentatively scheduled for April 20th, 1935. The framework of another ship, currently documented as "Yard #845" is being worked on in the adjacent gantry, and is emerging as a noticably similar, but different design. No comment from White Star or Harland & Wolff has been given regarding this ship since she was laid down a year and a half ago.

Lifeboats from the Tramp Steamer Jolly Mon have arrived at Matthew Town, Great Inagua Island. Their report is similar to many ships travelling the Windward Passage in recent months; Traversing the strait at night, they were stopped by a blacked out ship, and boarded by a crew speaking Iberian. One crew member was appearently shot during an attempt to resist the boarding, but the ship was successfully taken, and the crew set adrift with rations, charts, and navigational aids.
