Vladivostok Verifier - 28 May 1924

Floating Crane Trud has returned to Vladivostok upon the completion of coastal artillery works on Big Diomede Island in Bering Strait. Nearly a year ago, Trud departed Vladivostok to transport artillery, turret assemblies, and fire control equipment of battleship Gangut being scrapped at Petropavlovsk to Big Diomede Island. That artillery, four triple turrets mounting 305mm/52 guns and 16 130mm in casemate mounts, has been organized into two batteries, named in honor of Russian battleship they armed, herself named in honor of victory at Gangut battle in July 1714. Battery Gangut, on southeast side of island, consists of two of the triple 305mm turrets in reinforced concrete emplacements, plus eight 130mm guns in casemates blasted out of steep sides of island. Battery Admiral Apraxin, named after General-Admiral F.M. Apraxin, Commander of Russia's galley fleet at Gangut battle, also consists of two 305mm turrets, and 8 130mm guns in armored casemates blasted out of island sides. Also constructed is an airfield with sufficient enclosed shelters for a Squadron of twin-engine patrol aircraft, and temporary facilities for an additional two fighter or torpedo bomber squadrons.

Additional emplacements are provided for 100mm and 37mm antiaircraft artillery.

Geography of Big Diomede Island can be noted here

Crew of Trud, as well as construction crews she has brought back to Vladivostok, will enjoy well-earned rest and diversion here, after nearly 11 months spent in one of most remote locations of Russian Federation, before departing next Spring for Naval Base at Petropavlovsk to take artillery and fire control equipment from battleship Petropavlovsk being scrapped there to coast artillery emplacements being constructed east of Nunyamo on Chukotskiy Penninsula.

Upon completion of these works, Pacific exit of Northern Sea Route will be ensured for world's commerce.

Now that you've dealt with one little issue, could you do something about the condensation on the window in front of the camera, it's ruining the view!!!!!
