I'd prefer a little more seakeeping, but they're pretty balanced ships.

Enough to be getting on with for now. :P But seriously: eight capital ships and three aircraft carriers, each needing screens, plus the Baltic, which is well-suited to small ships - I may be a bit destroyer-heavy, but it's certainly within the limits of sanity.

Fair enough!

How are the 12 4.33'' guns in 8 mounts arranged on the aircraft carrier? 4 twins and 4 singles?

I should imagine so - the only other half-sane arrangement is six singles and two triples. There is a possible redesign on the same light displacement which ups the singles to twins, reduces the fuel consumption and requires a smaller powerplant, whilst (slightly) improving stability and giving a little residual strength, for a drop in seakeeping from 1.56 to 1.50 and an increase of 100 tonnes in the load condition, principally from ammunition.

However, Earl did post this design earlier (I checked!) so I'll stick with the extant plan - if nothing else, it makes for a bit of story material.

Triple 110mm guns would be something of an oddity, and I'd definitely expect 4x1 + 4x2 is the preferred layout.

Agreed - singles and twins are already in service, and developing a triple which is fairly obviously a poor fit to the requirement would be a decidedly odd use of resources.

The answer is ala Essex.

While I've only glanced at them so far my first question is why turret/barbette for the twin 11cm DP? Seems Mount & Hoist was more the OTL norm for DP secondary mounts.

Interesting on several counts...
1. Does Nordmark have helos/autogyros, or are the Germans providing them?
2. Intriguing that the Nordish are going quite gung-ho for small carriers like these. At least they've got a TDS.
3. I think we've had quite a number of skirmishes about deck-edge elevators, but I don't recall what the final decision was. What's Nordmark's reasoning here?

Airgroup's too small for my taste, but acceptable.

49 aircraft might physically fit on the ship but an operable airgroup is likely to be much lower, likely ~35. You probably need more misc. weight for accounting as well, SS rather underestimates things for small ships. Really you need around 120tons per aircraft for this size of ship rather than the 49tons given by the bizarre rules in the SS notes. Removing the armour and putting that into misc. weight nicely brings up the airgroup to ~37 which seems pretty reasonable compared to historical ships.

I'm not sure about the deck edge lift. The ship is probably a bit small if it's a proper overhung one.

It's probably a bit optimistic. With a 15-20ft TDS each side needed to have an effect on modern torpedoes you're left with only around 40ft hull width to cram everything into. There's a lot of machinery, fuel and munitions with not much space to fit it into. More sensible to leave the torpedo bulkhead out, or just put a note it represents increased subdivision rather than a proper TDS.

Spoiler alert!

Sachmle: the cybergnomes are at it again. Those should be mounts with hoists, yes.

Brock: You're stoofing around trying to sweep a minefield in the Baltic. Wouldn't you want something reasonably effective to shoot at (1) the enemy's aircraft trying to get rid of you, and (2) the enemy's torpedo boats on the other side of the minefield, trying to get rid of you?

I'm actually going to cancel two of the small carriers before they're even laid down - reasons will become apparent when I get the news up. And yes, I have started writing it.

49 aircraft is wildly optimistic, yes, and will be reduced in service. They'll probably finish up as fighter carriers, maybe with a few rotary-wing airframes. They might even become prototype ASW carriers, I don't know. The rotary-wing jobs are to be ordered from Germany, although this may be the first the Germans know of this, at least until I can get my own production started up. Stranger things have been done than starting building an aircraft carrier before figuring out where the aircraft are coming from. At least I'm building it all in one place.

The deck-edge lift is strange indeed, I think I can feel my structures professors' eyes burning into me right now. We'll put the weight into the airwing, this is one of Earl's designs. This is a revised version, without the attempt at a torpedo bulkhead or the extra weight for the deck-edge lift. This has an aircraft complement of about 25 using RA's 120 tons figure. We really need to sort out some sensible rules for this sort of thing.
