January 1
Today several high-ranking Chilean and Argentine officials, including Klaus Teitelboir, the President of the Chilean Senate, attended the laying down ceremony of the new minelayer-cruiser Covadonga being built for the Chilean Navy by Astillero Nav. at Puerto Belgrano. She is a modern and fast warship able to undertake several roles and is based on the highly successful Argentine minelayer, General San Martin lost in the recent war with the South African Empire after much sterling work.

January 5
The Navy has decided to scrap three of the four 1910 Class light cruisers that were refitted for service in the South American War but laid up since then. The RTS 307 ex-Francisco de Gurruchaga and the RTS 411 ex-Rosario are being scrapped at the Tandandor Yard. A fourth sister ship remains in service as a gunnery training ship.

January 4
Today the Commando de las Fuerzas Aereas Argentinas confirmed that a formal order has been placed with the German company Henschel for 164 Hs-129 Arg twin-engined armoured ground attack aircraft. Delivery is expected this year the type will replace the current Tucan T-17 armoured ground attack aircraft although many of them are brand-new improved T-17B variants and rumours suggested that a bomber Regiment may be re-equipped for the ground attack role.

March 28
The new tanker Dona Stella today officially joined the Auxiliary Squadron and will provide at-sea replenishment for the smaller vessels of the Navy and will transport oil along the coast to the various naval bases.

March 30
The Navy today formally commissioned four 1939 Class Destroyers, the Cervantes, Juan de Garray, Catamarca and San Juan into the 4th Destroyer Division. All are fleet destroyers and are armed with 115mm DP mounts and 600mm torpedoes and ASDIC systems for anti-submarine warfare.
Also today the new home-built P Class submarine Sante Fe joined the Submarine Squadron and is the last vessel planned for the Squadron.

April 1
Today two new destroyers have been laid down for the Navy, the Sparta at the Astillero Nav. shipyard and the Santa Cruz at AFNE Bahia Blanca. Both are 1939 Class Destroyers and will join the 4th Destroyer Division on completion.

April 10
The Army and the Infantería de Marina have both confirmed that the Senate has given spending approval for the new 80mm M-39 rocket artillery. The M-39 is a diglycol powered rocket based on the trial 50mm M-35 rocket shell and weighs 8kg with a 0.5kg warhead and a range of 5900m. A special six rail launcher with two wheels is easily transportable and easily placed and has up to 65 degrees of elevation. 48 launchers will be brought for use by mountain troops and 48 for the Marines.

Wednesday, November 24th 2010, 9:22pm

The Chilean Army will be intrigued to see what their Argentine compatriots think of the system; certain individuals in the Ejercito would be interested in demonstrations, come springtime and favorable reports.

6

Wednesday, November 24th 2010, 10:00pm

Dobutless that can be arranged by late summer when the first test lauchers are ready.

The idea behind these rocket launchers is to offer extensive firepower for light weight and to provide an easily transported artillery weapon that can be easily sited (back-blast is a problem though). Thus the Marines and Mountain Troops seem to be the only likely Argentine users for the foreseeable future.
In looks it should look like the OTL Nerbelwefer.

Wednesday, November 24th 2010, 10:04pm

Given the calibre, it sounds closer to the OTL Katushya rocket.

April 29
Today saw one of the most heated Chamber of Deputies meetings. The main topic for discussion was whether the nation should join the FAR Alliance. It was revealed to the Chamber that a promise to do so was made during the South American War. The Foreign Affairs Minister Eduardo Smith made the admission at the start of the meeting.
Eduardo Smith (ES): “Therefore we owe a debt to Atlantis for their support during the war and our Chilean allies have greatly benefited from aid and assistance from both militarily and economically. I recognise Senor Bazan Speaker.”
Senor M. Bazan (Conservative Party Deputy): “But don’t we owe more to other nations? The Italians have supplied us with ships, planes, arms and volunteers during the War and every year since the mid-1920s. They have done far more for us than the Atlanteans. The Mexicans sent us volunteers and the Germans have helped rebuild the Navy. We owe debts to a great many nations. Chile is now tied to buying what it wants from FAR. We are not, why should we be bullied into an alliance with them. What do we care of France and Russia? Would they help us against the Africans?”
ES: The Atlanteans have sold us ships and have practically rebuilt our aircraft industry, before it was in the doldrums and now is equal to any European manufacturer. They have the political power to influence a great many nations and they do have Allies in northern South America. (Cries of “Atlantean imperial puppets!” from the Social Democratic and Worker’s Party seats) But they have a stable influence; do you think the South Africans would dare attack Argentina with such a powerful ally?”
Bazan: “They have Dutch allies, Kongo; they have no reason to fear Atlantis.”
ES: But it would offer us large sums of money and economic aid at a time when the economy is struggling to grow. We need capital and Atlantis is willing to give us capital and economic aid.”
Senor P. Martinez (Social Democratic Deputy): “Could we now stick with our Chilean and Brazilian allies instead and keep our relations with Italy, Germany and Atlantis?”
ES: “Yes we could but they are not offering us any treaties or assistance. They are willing to take our Pesos for export orders but not to develop Argentina herself. We of course are on extremely good terms with Italy and Germany and that would continue. We only have to look towards Chile to see what we could benefit.”
Senor J. P. Panchero (Conservative Deputy): “Pah, all talk all talk! What do they care about us? Have they ever offered us anything since the war? Did they help us? Sure we got some old cruisers and they stole some good aircraft from us but they didn’t send men to help us. Italian and Mexican men died for our cause, no Atlantean man thought it worth his blood. Had they sent us three divisions we could have swept the African dogs into the sea!”
ES: “Senor please! Your comments might be heard in the press!”
Panchero: “Why not tell the truth you mean! Look at Chile! They stayed away from the war, never came in our side despite the ABC Treaty. They spent time taking over Bolivia for their own ends. Brazil deserted us in the time of need. Oh yes, but we are gaining strength, one day we’ll rise and smash the African overlord and free Uruguay. Then we will liberate Venezuela and Colombia from the boot of Atlantean oppression and then South America will be free! We’ll join with the revitalised Chile and Brazil and we will smash the Europeans! Right now Atlantis owns half of South America and England sits on our Malvinas Islands and Nordmark threatens us from its ill-gotten gains. Oh yes, Senor Smith would have us sell our souls to the European devils! I say we should wipe them out of our beloved and glorious South America. Simon Bolivar and General San Martin are turning in their graves at how you’ve betrayed them. May they rise up and spit in your face!”
ES: ”Speaker, please!”
Speaker: “Senor Panchero please calm down or leave the Chamber.”
Panchero: “No! It’s time these wishy-washy old men and liberals faced the truth. It is time we made our own way in the world. We need to stamp out this cancer of imperialism! You cowards won’t do anything will you? Your even more shameful than the Marxist deputies that sit over there. At least they have a cause, a mission, a goal and something they life and breath. You spineless scum just sit there like lapdogs!”
Speaker: “Guards, please remove Senor Panchero!”
Panchero: (As he’s being dragged from the Chamber) “No! No! No! I’m right, you’ll see, you’ll see one day!”

Senor Panchero seems to be a rather paranoid sort...good thing it was a chamber meeting and not something more public where Colombia, Chile or Atlantis could have had a feild day with his remarks.

Interesting look at Argentinian politics with reguards to foreign affairs.

10

Tuesday, December 7th 2010, 1:48pm

Senor Panchero seems like a stable, well behaved and focused politician. The nations of Asia hope for him to havea long and fruitful career in Argentine politics.

11

Tuesday, December 7th 2010, 2:52pm

Its not surprising Pindia holds that veiw. Thats likely because he seems to have the same prejudice that several nations in wesworld Asia seem to be afflicted with. ;)

Chile is now tied to buying what it wants from FAR.

*Looks at his list of foreign purchases over the past year:*
- 1 battlecruiser from Nordmark
- 2 different types of tank from Nordmark
- 64 Tucan T-18B NB-2 dive bombers from Argentina
- 1 minelayer from Argentina
- 6 pilot boats from Canada
- 1 battleship design from Canada
- 1 license to the M1 Carbine from the USA
- 300+ halftracks from the USA
- 1 license to the FAR 6.5 GPMG from France
- 1 license to the Petlyakov Pe-3 from Russia and Atlantis
- 1 license to Roth R1800 radial engine from Atlantis

Clearly someone forgot to inform Chile that they were tied to buying from FAR!

Hood, is anything of all this puplic?

14

Tuesday, December 7th 2010, 8:58pm

I'm not really sure what Argentina would gain by joining FAR. In the even of another South American war, is it really likely that Atlantis, France or Russia is going to care enough to declare war on South Africa? A resurgent Brazil might liven things up, but I can't see them invading large chunks of Argentina. Maybe increased competition along the Plate, but how do you get help from FAR in that regard?

15

Wednesday, December 8th 2010, 3:53pm

No its not public although elements on the disagreement might reach the press without actual quotes from Senor Panchero.

Really this peice is here to show that a few hardliners exist in politics still in Argentina. They want a day of reckoning while the current centre-left coalition just want to lie back, kick-start the economy and count some Pesos and invest more in social welfare.

There is no way the Argentine Army is heading anywhere. Personally I can't see Argentina joining FAR, Chile doesn't seem to have gained much from it politically but certainly we want Atlantis to know we still want to be good partners in trade. Italy is still partner numero uno with Germany close behind. Mexico has dropped off of late owing to the oil crisis which some in the current government think was actually not that bad a move, just the execution which went a little awry.

May 15
The new lightweight I.Ae.20 El Boyero has already proved itself in service when an El Boyero on a routine patrol was attracted by flares to five mountaineers trapped after a rock fall. The brave pilot made four trips and hazardous landings and take-offs from a tiny flat strip of land to rescue the entire party. The pilot from Aerea Grupo No.2, Lieutenant Gonzalez Vasques was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for his efforts.

May 17
National Navy Day
This year many bases had open days and the public were allowed aboard the cruiser Espora and the destroyers Mendoza and Catamarca. The Fleet was fully dressed at Bahia Blanca and ten FMA I-02N and five Spartan NB-2 bombers made a spectacular flypast over the harbour. Six MTBs staged a mock battle along the seafront at Comodoro Rivadavia and the Marines made a huge battle scene at Rawson. Our Chilean allies have sent the recently-refitted flak cruiser Concepción and the destroyers Capitan Eyzaguirre and General San Martin to Comodoro Rivadavia to celebrate Navy Day.
In what many see as welcome political change, although not without controversy, was the attendance of the Nordish Squadron currently on a tour of the Atlantic. Having sailed the short distance from Grand Uruguay the Nordish fleet arrived at Bahia Blanca during the morning giving the Argentine Flagship a 21-gun salute. It is hoped during their ten day stay that the crews of the Nordish ships will encounter the best of Argentine hospitality. The Nordish squadron comprises the battleship HNMS Folkunga Lion as flagship, the battlecruiser HNMS Dristigheten (to be transferred to our Chilean ally on 15 June), the aircraft carrier HNMS Orn, the heavy cruiser HNMS Malmö, the light cruiser HNMS Borlänge, five destroyers and one tanker.

May 19
The Chief of Staff of the Navy Almirante Dominguez and several of his staff and other officers from the warships in Bahia Blanca attend a dinner aboard the Folkunga Lion hosted by the Nordmarckian officers and crew.

May 21
Visiting officers of the Nordish Squadron have a State Banquet held in their honour at Bahia Blanca city hall hosted by the Prime Minister Vice President Enrique Pastelle. Tomorrow the several officers from both navies will attend a ceremony at the Bahia Blanca naval memorial to those who were lost during the Argo-Nordish War of 1921.

May 27
The HNMS Folkunga Lion departed Bahia Blanca at 0800 today and was followed by her squadron. As a parting gesture the cruiser La Argentina escorted the Squadron for the first hour after the battleship Libertad fired a 21-gun salute to the departing ships. Tomorrow our cruisers and battleships will commence a four-day exercise off the Argentine coast near Rawson.

June 1
Colonel Esteban Roja of the Andes Brigada [a well-known hero, in 1933 he personally rescued three soldiers who had fallen off a ledge and he carried each man five miles to safety earning himself the Argentine Army to the Effort and Abnegation Medal, during the war under heavy fire he carried a wounded Sergeant to a first aid post being hit by splinters himself to earn the Argentine Nation to the Valour in Combat Medal and later on in the war destroyed five tanks at close range by throwing anti-tank mines under their tracks. Post-war he was awarded the Argentine Army Distinguished Service Order] has set off from the Paraguayan town of Pozo Colorado in the Province of Presidente Heyes following the Rio Verde into the Province of Boqueron in search of Bolivian drug-smugglers and rebel factions. His hundred man unit will be deployed for thirty days and hopefully will safely reach the Gran Chaco area at the conclusion of their mission.

June 4
Colonel Roja’s “Forca Chaco” heading along the Rio Verde, was about half-way along the river when they intercepted a small boat. They forced the boat to the shore and on inspection found a large quantity of Coca aboard. The two men in the boat were arrested but under interrogation refused to name their contacts.

June 5
Colonel Roja’s “Forca Chaco” today was ambushed by armed men near the Rio Verde. After an hour gunfight an armed reconnaissance found eleven dead bodies and following a trail a small encampment of huts was found which was burned to the ground. Three other armed men were hiding but surrendered.

June 6
“Hello Commodore Harwood. Come in have a seat. How are the family?”
“Hello Campase [Contra Almirante Campase, Bahia Blanca Yard Commander],I’m fine and the family back home are well too. I’ve brought you some gin.”
“Ah my friend you always remember my gin. It’s been some time since you’ve visited, you missed the Navy Day.”
“Yes I know but there’s been a lot to do lately. Been busy with exercises in the Cape. I’ve brought my golf clubs, let’s see if you can lower your handicap this time!”
“I hope so, we’ll go straight over after lunch to the club. I’ve chosen a new restaurant, nothing expensive but good quality with the finest wine selection in Bahia Blanca.”
“Sounds good. How’s everything here?”
“Ah you know, much the same. Everything the same. Ships to repair, absent sailors in the brothels, fuel shortages, too many inspections from politicos. Always the same here.
“Well you’d better make that gin last it’s the last for a bit.”
“Really? Why?”
“I’m going home for a spell. Big NATO exercise coming up and I’m to command a group it seems.”
“I see. I heard that the HMS Formidable was going. I thought that was odd.”
“Yes I’ll be sorry to see the old Formidable go.”
“But surely you’ll be back soon?”
“Dunno, depends on the situation back home. Anyhow the Formidable won’t be here when I return. She’s being sold.”
“But Commodore surely the Admiralty will send another? So many ships seem to have left already?
“I’m not sure what the Admiralty will send down to replace her. Cruisers are worth their weight in gold still and the older ships are still being sold off”
“But what will you fly your flag from? A destroyer?”
“Either that or a sloop I guess for a bit.”
“Oh my its nearly time, I made the reservations myself. You’d better go downstairs to the car and I’ll meet you when I’ve got my clubs.”
“Sure, see you downstairs.”
“Lieutenant get me Naval Intelligence. Hello, Campase here Sir. I’ve just confirmed that the HMS Formidible is leaving the Malvinas for good. The Admiralty aren’t willing to send another cruiser, certainly not until after the NATO exercise, probably be mid summer by then. Thank you Sir. I will Sir. Goodbye.”

June 8
The “Forca Chaco” has reached the small border town of Doctor Pedro P. Pena on the Bolivian border. Colonel Roja was able to install law and order in the town. Several soldiers and policemen formerly loyal to General Diaz were found still controlling the town but they were removed by Roja’s men and a platoon of his men formed a local police force. During the night several mountain troops led by Roja made a raid on two local villas arresting around ten suspected Bolivian drug runners and criminals and seizing a quantity of both drugs and guns. One of the captured men was the wanted man Antonio “One-Eye” Caldera. Several fields were torched.

June 10
The “Forca Chaco” left the town of Doctor Pedro P. Pena, leaving behind a platoon and two medical officers with supplies, and began heading north along the border. An I.Ae.20 El Boyero light aircraft arrived to give reconnaissance capability for Roja’s force.

June 11
The “Forca Chaco” has killed nine suspected smugglers trying to get across the border, no soldiers were wounded.

June 12
Auto Union AG of Chemnitz, Germany announced today that it was investing RM 6,000,000 in an overseas venture in Argentina. The newly formed Auto-Union Argentinas S.A., located in the thriving Argentine city of Santa Rosa, will import, assemble and market the parent firm’s Type 60 “Volkswagen” small passenger sedan in Argentina and, potentially, neighbouring countries of South America. Auto Union AG joins with local partners in the establishment of the factory – construction of which should begin this forthcoming August – and in establishing a dealer network across Argentina. The Ministry of Transportation declared today that not only would this secure jobs in Santa Rosa but also would mean soon all Argentines will have the ability to purchase a reliable car at relatively cheap prices rather than relying on expensive imports.

June 14
The “Forca Chaco” seized a shipment of narcotics in a hiding place just after dawn. Colonel Roja and six soldiers laid an ambush for the smugglers when they returned. After a gruelling nine-hour wait a group of men appeared, some were armed with rifles, others with what appeared to be sub-machine guns. Quickly Colonel Roja opened fire and within seconds the men were cut down. Following the trail during the night they reached the border where two men were waiting the several mules. They tried to make a break across the border but were shot in the legs to prevent their escape. One of the men later died from his wounds.

June 18
The “Forca Chaco” reached the border town of General Eugenio A. Garay just a few miles from the large Bolivian border town of Villazon. Here the former UPAF forces still control the countryside and the town with few pretences towards the new political situation in the larger towns of the south. Here news takes a long time to travel and the rural parts of the country are still largely undisturbed by the civil war or indifferent to its outcome. Colonel Roja set about enforcing law and order and some UPAF members were disarmed. During the night patrols were made along the border.

June 19
Rumours persist that elements of “Forca Chaco” sneaked across the border into Villazon where three notorious smugglers and criminals were assassinated by marksmen during the night. Colonel Roja himself was at a ball organised by the Mayor of General Eugenio A. Garay.

June 20
Whilst walking through the town Colonel Roja was attacked by three hooded men, the Colonel managed to outwit them in unarmed combat and he was unhurt. Of his three assailants one suffered a broken wrist, another a broken nose and two cracked ribs and the third was unconscious for an hour. An informer led a platoon of men to an unknown hiding place where a large amount of liquor was found and confiscated.

June 21
“Morning Sir!”
“Good Morning Capitan Delores. And how are your Parachutists this fine morning?”
“Very well Sir.”
“I believe you’re going to give me a full training report. Have you got all the men you need?”
“Yes Sir, we’ve managed to get enough volunteers, several Mountain troops as we expected, good tough men ready to fight anywhere and even some Marines.”
“So your loyal “Andes Hoppers” couldn’t be without you eh? How many men in the unit have ever jumped before?”
“None Sir. But we have erected two towers here in the camp to practice jumping and Sergeant Major Hortez had an idea for the men to jump off the back of trucks to practice rolling.”
“Well hopefully the Air Force at my request will loan you a Junkers to jump from. When you get any parachutes of course.”
“Do you think I should try a jump Sir?”
“No, you’re far too large and old for that kind of thing! Besides you’re the unit commander, I don’t want you stuck in hospital for six months with a broken back or something.”
“Well we’re continuing the normal fatigues and drills, of course when we get some parachutes we can begin some real training. The men of course have never even seen one yet!”
“Well a lot of officers in the Staff don’t like the idea of Parachute troops. They call them a fluke, militarily useless, a flying death-squad. They expect in a war all your men would be killed or wiped out. Few would sanction your men to ever set off on a parachute mission. Even fewer know what you’re men could do and what targets we could hit. My Brigade is the best in the Army and I’ve been given the job of making this unit into a full combat unit of the Army. Your job is to train the men. Then we’ll work out the strategy and tactics we want to employ. In the meantime don’t mess this up otherwise you’ll be posted do far south you’ll be shovelling Antarctic snow! Not to mention a lot of Generals will be pleased to be vindicated and all those who believe in the project will be pretty pissed off men.”
“I understand Sir! We won’t fail the Army Sir. My men never have and I will never let them down.”
“Now show me these towers, you say you jump off them…”

June 23
The I.Ae.20 El Boyero attached to “Forca Chaco” followed a group of twenty men and a dozen mules and horses around thirty miles heading into Paraguay. Colonel Roja led forty hand-picked men in pursuit. By dusk they had closed in enough to hear the voices of the men in their encampment for the night. Colonel Roja led the attack at dawn and nine armed men were killed, several others entrenched themselves in some rocky hills and it took three hours to dislodge them. The El Boyero aircraft was used as a bomber, a Private Valdez dropping hand grenades out of the open door. The aircraft then chased a group of four escaping men northwards. Private Valdez managed to shoot one of them with his pistol. Eventually Colonel Roja led the final charge up the hillside and with superior firepower flushed the remaining men out. A platoon by dusk had rounded up the escaping group with the aid of the El Boyero.

June 24
Aboard the aircraft carrier Independencia the Independencia Squadron 1 lined up its entire complement of twelve FMA I-02N fighters for the first time during a naval exercise off the coast with several other warships. All twelve fighters were flown during the week-long exercise and the pilots were elated with their new mounts which are among the most advanced at sea today and a huge leap from the old fixed-undercarriage Japanese Mitsubishi fighters they had. Six new Tucan T-18B NB-2 bombers were also embarked by Independencia Squadron 2.

June 25
A Junkers Ju-52 transport airlifted elements of “Forca Chaco” to several villages in the Province of Chaco. In the harsh waterless terrain the Junkers was the best way to cover the ground. The rest of the force headed for the town of Capitan Pablo Lagerenza. It was a long endurance march but the hardy Mountain Troops managed it within four days to arrive on the 29th.

June 28
The Chamber of Deputies again discussed the idea of joining FAR and after four hours of deliberations a vote was held. 52% of the Deputies voted against the idea, 42% voted for joining and 6% abstained.
