Poland's News and Events Q4/34

OOC: That happens when you don't do your research :D Edited version on the way

October 9th 1934- Marshall Kustrzeba was sick and he knew it. The doctors told him it was only a question of less than a year before the cancer in his liver end his life and he already was in peace with that fact. But now his plans were to ensure peace exist in his beloved Poland even after he was gone.

As such he called Tadeusz Mital (1) on the phone and asked him to get in touch with the German embassy. "Security will be achieved and them peace and prosperity will follow." were his thoughts while putting the receiver back on the cradle.

His plans since 1929 have being for growing cooperation with both Germany and Russia and while a non-aggression treaty was in place with Russia the same can't be said about Germany. The time to end that mistake was at hand.

(1) Polish foreign minister

October 11th 1934- It has being announced today the plans for a new squad automatic weapon were ended today, according to sources in the Ministry of War, "due to more pressing concerns."

The same sources stated the current light squad weapon (1) will instead be licensed to Romania and Yugoslavia to fill their needs and help in the standardization of the armed forces of all the three nations.

October 18th 1934- In ceremonies today the largest drydock facility in our nation, localized in the city of Koszalin, was announced as completed after over a year of improvements to the facility.

The facility will now be capable to either repair or build ships larger than the current ships on the fleet and rumors abound that maybe a ship larger than the current ones could be build pretty soon in this facility.

October 23rd 1934- Wladyslaw Sikorski descended from the Paris-Warsaw flight and smiled. "Back to work for my homeland."

He was been recalled by Marshall Kustrzeba himself to help in the development of the nation's mobile forces thnsk to his just recently published book (1) and he especially liked his new position as commander of all the non-cavalry mobile forces in Poland. Of course his force at the time were only composed by one forming motorized brigade and some other independent units but he knew that under his command they will grow in size soon.

(1) War in the Future. Published IOTL in early 1934. I guess the same happened here.

Rumors abound of the reasons Minister Mital has being in Berlin for over a week now but after it was rumored he visited Munich the joke has being that he only went to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest.

November 24th 1934- Reports from Berlin indicate that indeed a Non-Aggression Pact was the reason of the visit of Foreign Minister Mital to Germany. The preliminary talks lasted close to a month and with the arrival of the German Foreign Minister Stressemann the talks moved to the next phase.

Both Foreign Ministers posed for pictures while talking to the press and indicating a Pact will be signed by the end of the month. Asked the reason of the Polish iniciative to do this Mital indicated that "the main seeds of trouble between our nations(1) have been resolved. As such we decided it was time to look forward into the future and the best way was to do it in peace, as brothers and partners in the great family of nations."

The terms have not being disclosed yet but Foreign Minister Mital indicated it uses the Franco-Polish-Russian treaty as basis of the current agreement. This has caused speculation of how similar this new treaty is to the older one.

November 25th 1934 - Marshall Kustrzeba finished writing the note, sealed the envelope and gave the letter to the courier. The note was directed to the Yugoslavian ambassador indicating him that Poland will not support any move by them against Italy.

He has being working hard for the last couple of years to bring peace and prosperity to his nation and he wasn't going to risk it supporting what he considered a fool's errand. But he also knew his time was short (1) and the problem still remains of finding a successor. He knew Mital (2) was the logical successor but he wasn't well liked by the military so he maybe have to settle for a military man after all. He only hoped he picks the right man for the job before his time was up.

(1) Liver cancer. Will die by Q2 1935.

December 15th 1934 Marshall Kustrzeba received the news of the alliance between Germany and Nordmark andit was mildly surprised by them. He knew something was going to happen when the ruler of Nordmark decided to make a trip to Germany but not of this magnitude. At least he knew both Nordmark and Germany have a good relationship with his nation so he didn't felt a threat coming his way.

As such he wrote a short note and send by courier to the embassies in Berlin and Stockholm to be delivered to their respective governments:

The nation of Poland hopes the new ties between the nations of Germany and Nordmark serve to improve peace in the Baltic region and sincerely hope other nations decide to join in regional treaties to counter the giant power blocks that seem to exist in our World. Again, congratulations and hope peace prevails for a long time.

December 18th 1934- Wladyslaw Sikorski sat on the table and shook his head while giving the bad news to the teams of engineers. “Some idiot convinced the Marshall(1) that with the new 25 tonners being develop in Germany and by the joint Czech-Dutch venture that we should also began the design of a similar vehicle.”

“That’s is not that bad of an idea.” responded Major Rudolph Gundlach, leader of the team building the 10 tonner cruiser tank. His mind was already running around in how to upgrade his current design. But his dreams were shot down fairly fast by the response of Sikorski.

“The problem is the Marshall has being sway by infantry officers bend in having their own tanks. He wants a multiturreted vehicle to support infantry, (2)similar to the Russian ones.(3) And just received word funds will be taken from our branch to began development of this vehicle.” was his response Major Gundlach.

The uproar started in the room, with all teams worried their research was going to be slowed down due to this. Sikorski banged his hand on the table to get everyone’s attention. “This is what is going to happen. The seven tonner (4) is too far ahead to stop production but in reality we can’t start full blow production until January of 1936. But at least we can use the twin turrets taken from the Vickers to build 24 vehicles next year. That way we can see what bugs exists, if anything, before we start full blown production.”

The members of that team nodded their heads in agreement but Gundlach’s team members still were grumbling. Sikorski turned in their direction and began to speak. “Your team is behind the seven tonner one and you must likely will pay the price.” Gundlach began to protest but Sikorski stopped him. “You know better than start a fight Rudolph,” Sikorski said, “the decision has being made. With luck you could start production in the middle of 1937 at the earliest instead of late 1936. I’m sorry, but funds will be allocated to that fool’s errand. What is worse, I will not be in charge of that project, the Infantry branch will.”

(2) The 25TP will be in reality close to 30 tons, with a 75mm howitzer and a 7.92mm coaxial machinegun in a large turret and two secondary turrets mounted ahead of the main turret on the port and starboard sides of the hull with single machineguns each. Armour protection was up to 50mm on front and the turret and 20mm on the sides. Using a 320hp diesel engine it was capable of 32kph on the road and 25kph offroad. It has a crew of 7 men, one of them a radioman/loader. It will be operational by the middle of 1937.

(3) They are using the Russian T30 and T29 as guides.

(4) In reality close to 9 tons. The 10 tonner will be close to 13 tons by the time is completed.

The MG turrets aren't really a bad feature, they're just man-power intensive, expensive, and the additional size tends to make these tanks vulnerable.

And Germany's not building any 25 ton tanks! Well, OK, the spec says 24000 kg, that's only 24 (metric) tons! What, that's over 25 English tons? Bah..... :)

It isn't. It might well be over 25 United States tons, though. And if the Poles are using American units to measure German tanks, I think Europe has finally lost it.
