Dagblatet Politiken 6th October

After some days of negotiation, The Minister of Defense, Christian Anders Zahle announced from Yugoslavia yesterday, that he has concluded a deal for the purchase of the former Austro-Hungarian Battleship Tegetthoff from the Yugoslav government.

"We have been looking for a vessel to bolster the Navy's abilities, since the tragic accident that befell the Copenhagen earlier this year, and believe that Tegetthoff will fill that requirement."

When asked about the cost of the battleship, the Minister said, "As for the details of the deal, to summarise, the K.D.M. will transfer it's 2 newly built F.1. class frigates, and 2 destroyers to the Yugoslav Navy, in return for Tegetthoff"

When asked about the Iberian squadron currently in Danish waters, he said "It is our earnest hope to have Tegetthoff in service before the end of the year, and allow our Iberian allies to be home for Christmas"

This follows on from the Italian transfer of Teggetthoff to Yugoslavia in Q3

Bit of a surprize given the Q3 news report dosn't mention this!

It is however nice to see Tegetthoff remain in service, I'm not sure how others will react though.

Russian response to Tegetthoff

Use a bit of capital ship tonnage and put the following in the Baltic Sea:

16,000 tons, 4x381mm, 330mm belt & turret, 12cm deck

plus maybe an MN Petain clone.

That frees up a lot of tonnage for the remaining Russian BBs.

The main force of Russian BBs and CVs will be with the Northern Fleet because the restricted waters of the Baltic Sea aren't really suitable for modern BBs. But a few floating 381mm and 305mm guns on it will be a nice reinforcement for the submarines, torpedo boats, mines, coast artillery, and land-based naval aviation that will be the main Russian defenses on those waters.

Well after the discussion about it, it got forgotten what with all the other stuff that came around...however it was determined that this would be what would happen.

Filipino response: no problemo, unless Tegetthoff shows up in Siam.

If that happens...ve haf vays... ;)

Reaction...

Out of character, it's consistent with my recollections of how it was going to work. Though, to be fair, those recollections were hazy.

In character:

"In Berlin, the Reichstag debated a response to the Danish dreadnought purchase through most of the morning. The debate began with a speech by Fatherland Party member Alfred von Tirpitz, who spoke at length about the need for a strong Reichsmarine in the face of an unprecedented global arms build-up. Admiral Tirpitz tabled a motion to condemn the Danish purchase and renounce the Treaty of Versailles, which was promptly defeated. Chancellor Cuno then tabled a motion to re-state Germany's commitments to Versailles, which very narrowly passed after several members of Gustav Stresemann's DVP abstained during the vote.

"Meanwhile, officials in India seem utterly disinterested in the Danish purchase, noting that the dreadnought was not well suited for long oceanic voyages and was most likely intended for local coast defence and training."

In South Africa naval architects wonder about the deal as it is not clear what Denmark will do with such an outdated, topheavy and cramped design which proofed two times in the past to lack sufficent underwaterprotection and which does not look as an interesting object for a total rebuild....

Oh, I dunno. It'd make one whale of a seaplane carrier... ;)

BTW only one Tegetthoff was sunk in the WW timeline.

Uh, probably that naval achitect had a bottle too much - saw it twice, you know....

Anyway, short or ESPANA the TEGETTHOFFs were probably the worst of all BBs even though they had a decent look and carried an impressive number of (not to impressive) guns in (susceptible) triple mounts.

She is only meant as a short term backup until The Navy get the go-ahead to build TYR or something similliar!

After that 12 big guns + the narrow straits of the Kattegat = possibility! ( not counting the mines, shore torpedo instalations and shore based aircraft!)

Damn, i still need to write my WWI history. Then you might need to change that statement to "only one Tegetthoff class didn't survive the war"

Yes, I seem to remember that the Politicians in Denmark were a bit problematic, cancelling all shipbuilding. Even if Tegetthoff is not the best BB around, it is perhaps better than nothing at all. Still, in the end this action may prove to be nothing but a waste of money.

mabye so, but.......

......it gives the Social Democrats an opportunity to get rid of the Iberians that have been giving the opposition so much ammo in arguements about the nation not being able to defend itself!!!!!
