Germany Q2/38

April 4, 1938 - Berlin

Decisions have been made on what to do with the guns removed from the scrapped battleship Prinz Regent Luitpold. 8 of the 15cm/45 guns will be mounted in turrets similar to those on the KMs large destroyers of the Erich Koellner class and installed at Memel, on the land recently purchased there. The new shore battery will be supported by 8.8cm AA guns that can also, if necessary, provide additional fire against motor torpedo boats and other smaller vessels. The remaining 6 guns will be mounted in similar turrets and installed at the new KM base at Stralsund. The 30.5cm twin turrets and their guns will be installed at Koenigsburg (2 turrets), where they will reinforce the existing defences, and at Stralsund (3 turrets), where they and the 15cm turrets will comprise the defences. "The Baltic is quiet, and we expect it to remain so in the future", said Grand Admiral Raeder when asked about these plans. "But our expectations do not necessarily reflect what actually will happen, so this disposition of the older weapons seemed the best use of them."

April 12, 1938 - Berlin

The Luftwaffe has accepted the DFS-230 as it's assault glider for the Fallschirmjaegers, with the Gotha Go-242 continuing developement for use as a transport glider for the Fallschirmjaegers.

Ooh, make the Me 323 and the BV 222 next! :P :D

Not sure I'll create the Me-321/323 here, but the Bv-222 is a distinct possibility. I'll have to see how the Bv-222 works out with Jumo-208s, though, the -207 was canceled in WW 1937 (and the Bramo-323 is going out of production very soon).

For some odd reason I'm just tickled pink at the idea of those Me321/323s and the monster flying boats like the BV222 and BV238.

If you're finishing up the Go 242, then I suppose the Go 244 is a development possibility, too?

Other possible large flying boats are the Dornier Do-214 and Do-216.

The Go-244 is a possibility, but really only if Germany gets into a war and needs a large number of short-ranged transport aircraft.

Canada already took a stab at something like the ME-323, but the tech wasn't really up to par. Might go for another attempt in the near future.

I still think Canada should develop the Walrus HULA. :P

June 18, 1938 - Fredricshafen

The Dornier Flugzeugwerke announced the availability for purchase of the company's new bomber aircraft, the Do-217. Developed with a combination of company funds and funds from other countries, the Do-217 is powered by 2 BMW-801 radial engines or 2 Jumo-211s and carries a defensive armament of 2 turreted 11mm MG-111s (replaceable by a single 15mm MG-151 if desired) and twin MG-81Zs in the nose and the ventral gondola. Bombload is up to 3000 kg internally or 2000 kg externally, with a maximum total load of 4000 kg.

When can Iberia expect delivery of it's examples, Hrolf.

The lads in CASA and DAF Iberia want to get the jigs ready......

Which model would Iberia like, the Do-217A, with the BMW-801s, or the -217C, with the Jumo-211s? The -217C is lighter, with a well proven engine, but it's not as fast. The -217A is faster, but has a new engine that has had some problems getting into aircraft.

We'll take a couple of each for evaluation, please.

I expect that Iberia will want the top turret with the single 15mm MG-151 for commonality, correct?

First aircraft (a -217C) can be delivered in late September, first -217A will follow in early November.

15mm is most likely, and the schedule is grand!
