A new dual-purpose design first installed on the Leipzig class light cruisers. The long barrels and resulting high muzzle velocity give the weapon a flatter trajectory and longer range vs surface targets and a higher ceiling and longer slant range against aircraft than the preceding 8.8cm/45 weapon.

A new automatic AA weapon, that reuses the ammunition and barrels of the older 3.7cm/83 SK L/83, it is fed from 5 round strips. Of the Leipzig class cruisers, only Nurnberg carries this weapon, they were not ready in time for Liepzig
