Autozeitung, Saturday, 25 February 1950

In an interview with Minister of Transport Hermann-Wildermuth earlier this week the minister indicated his confidence that the entirety of the planned National Motorways System will be complete by the autumn of this year. He stated that work will be concentrated on the remaining incomplete sections rather than on improving already existing sections. More than ninety percent of the projected network has been constructed and open to traffic, including links with France, the Netherlands, Poland, and Hungary.

Training Frigate Roon, Norfolk, 26 February 1950

Mohr was quite satisfied with the performance so far of his ship in its exercises with American submarines. The American observers were impressed with the ability of the Roon’s underwater detection systems to track the several submarines the Roon had been pitted against; allowed the opportunity to operate the systems themselves they found it easy to master. Now whether his government would allow the sale of the Roon’s technology to the Americans was a question above Mohr’s pay grade; however, given the latitude he had been given to demonstrate it, Mohr was confident that an accommodation would be made, eventually.

Sächsische Zeitung, Tuesday, 28 February 1950

The Junkers works at Kothen has reportedly re-established low-rate production of the Ju390C troop and cargo transport against orders for the Luftwaffe for ten new aircraft to make good attrition. The decision comes at a time when long-range transport aircraft are in high demand, which has led to speculation that some Ju390 aircraft might be sold to the Netherlands and employed to ferry troops to their rebellious colonies in central Africa.

London, The German Embassy, Saturday, 4 March 1950

Walter Schellenburg quickly opened the gilt-edged envelope that bore the imprint of the British Air Ministry. Rarely such correspondence came to his desk, relations between Britain and Germany having grown so frosty. To his surprise it was an invitation to attend a demonstration of the RAF’s latest jet bomber, the BCAC Canberra, later in the month. Apparently the British were going to show off the Canberra for most of the foreign attaches in Britain. So he marked the 25th of the month on his calendar and set in train making the necessary arrangements. Of course, he would notify Abwehr headquarters in Berlin.

Die Welt Am Sonntag, Sunday, 5 March 1950

The crisis in the former Dutch colony of Kongo continues, and the outlook is unclear at this point in time. In the neighbouring colony of Oubangi-Shari Dutch forces are actively engaged in restoring order and suppressing the rebels under General N’Dofa. In Kongo, negotiation appears to be the preferred Dutch tactic.

On the Kongolese side, Baron Anthony Owija has been proclaimed President of the independent state of Kongo, with Joseph Kasa-vubu as prime minister. Patrice Lumumba, a prominent politician in the pre-independence period, has emerged as a third member of the governing triumvirate. The whereabouts of the well-respected Julius Limbani, remain unknown at this time.

I thought they might be useful in helping frame the narrative. The Baron is a bit of a reach but I think that photo captures how you've portrayed him.

Training Frigate Roon, The Mid-Atlantic, Saturday, 11 March 1950

Mohr had been surprised to receive orders to cut short the Roon’s exercises with the Americans and make all haste for a rendezvous point half-way between Brazil and Africa. After a hurried refuelling at Norfolk they had cleared and for four days and made a steady fifteen knots on a generally south-eastward course. The Admiralstab had given him very little information other than further orders would be provided, soon. Rumour was rife among the crew, as was speculation among his officers.

Die Welt Am Sonntag, Sunday, 12 March 1950

He is the most dangerous man in all Africa, General N’Dofa, architect of the rising against Dutch rule in Oubangi Chari several years ago, and most recently the leader of the current ‘war of liberation’ against the legitimate authorities in that Dutch territory. Suspected of complicity in the disappearance of Prime Minister Julius Limbani, and of complicity in the rising of anti-Dutch elements in neighbouring Kongo, his whereabouts are, at present, unknown. The Kriminalpolizei and other members of the International Criminal Police Commission are actively cooperating together to bring this miscreant to justice.
