Also, SATSUMA could twist things a bit with the "subject to the outcome of the plebiscite cited in 1D above" bit (which I think is what China's doing).

The way this little digression got started was with the perception of SATSUMA. How the various signatories are perceived adhere to their apparent obligations under the protocol is the matter.

The phrase "SATSUMA could twist things" is exactly what plays to the prevailing POV. SATSUMA can go ahead and do just that, but to the non-signatories watching, it may not look like a very savory or trustworthy choice.

A Red Mexico creates a problem that would end with the end of Nato. Atlantis of late is pulling more into accomodation with Iberia, the United States will be nervous by such occuring close to their borders and Great Britain has been more preocupied by other parts of the world of late.

There are other complications as well, depending on how far the the Left Foxy goes.

Mexico will have two of their warships in a Brazilian port when the revolution apparently takes place. Now if Foxy goes Socialist in Mexico, and keeps the name "Republic of Mexico" all is fine things can continue the way they are. However if Mexico goes Marxist and turns into the "People's Republic of Mexico" or some such sort then there are problems. Brazil does not and would not recognize such a nation and therefore the captains of the two ships would be asked what countries they are members of. If the "Republic of Mexico" they are interned, because such a country no longer exists. If the "Peoples Republic of Mexico" then they are also interned because in the eyes of Brazil such a country also does not exist until such time as Brazil decides to recognize it as a country (never).

Only seems that way because the U.S. has been rather quiet lately and all you've heard about Atlanto-Iberian relations is Pacific policy in OOC.

IMO it will be economic suicide for Mexico. The failures of communists movements in WW should serve as an example but if Argentina goes Socialist, why not Mexico also?

Lets wait and see if that happens in Argentina first...

If memory serves, the only recent agreement signed by Atlantis and Iberia was also signed by the US.

so invading a fellow member nation because their new government is not seem as "good" by the more powerful members is ok? That shows how "democratic" Nato is. Or how some of their members are bend in pushing their values to the rest fo the world by bullying them.

What would be next? Invade the US because a Republican returns to the White House? Or Perhaps put the Stuarts back on the throne? Or replace Atlantis government for a isolationist one?

Intervention doesn't nessassarily mean change of government.

So why intervene in Mexico then?

So you're saying Atlantis will topple a foreign government just because it fits their interests without regard for that country desires? I am shocked and surprised that the peaceful Atlantis will be bullying another nation. So out of character for that nation

Did I specifically say "Atlantis will topple a foreign government"?! I was merely suggesting a counter to your NATO will die theory.

You sure have a bee in your bonet today!

This is getting very interesting, very fast. Meanwhile, no one has noticed that the US is also going left...

295

No, we've noticed, all right. I don't think it will stay that way - Socialism fits the US as well as Cinderella's slipper fits the ugly stepsisters.

Yes, we have noticed alright. Should the US go completely Red, well the Brazilians will just have to say "no coffee for YOU!" until they return to more sensible policies. That should undercut their so-called revolution right there, although it will most certainly hurt Brazil economically.

The US going red would turn OTL cold war upside down - that is, in fact, a very interesting scenario from a players point of view!

So are you saying, NATO actually does not exist? Is merely a ghost used to push people around?

With NATO not existant, the whole conflict theme can be re-thought and there may be more option fo some action.

The US is not going to become Communist. President Long isn't a Communist, he's a populist, which means he's opposed to big money running the country for it's own gain.

Russia would be fine with that. We've already curbed our bankers!
