That example is apples to oranges. You have control over what designs are built since nobody else has controlled Atlantis. I had no idea that Swampy was going to take over Brazil and that when he did he would make what is, to my mind, a minor error. He believed the design study he had was the last word where the Saggies were concerned, which is patently not correct. I believe Rooi can back me up on that, since he helped me with improving the Saggie to what I have had since before Swampy even too...
I hardly "modified" the design. I refer you to this thread, dated 05/07/07, which is the SS3 version. That version was copied data point for data point from the SS2 version on my Alienware. If Swampy used one of the preliminary designs I had sent him, that's not my issue. The final design that I had decided on displaced over 10,000 tons. I don't have any 9,000 ton version, on this computer or my Alienware. However, my bad on the shakedown cruise, I read the duration as 6 weeks. EDIT: By the by, ...
I've decided to go with the 9/55, from the sims I've done it seems to provide performance nearly on par with the 10"/45 listed.
I don't have any 8" guns. And the performance, it might not be all that much better than the USN's 8"/55 guns firing superheavy shells, but I imagine there's probably a bigger difference between it and the 8" guns currently serving.
Here's the Amazonas' main gun, if anybody is interested. Quoted Originally posted by thesmilingassassin Still, it would be preaty expensive for a vessel of that size and your already splurging on larger units. I can get a decent multirole design (MS-26) on just under 700 tons. Really? The MIB might be contacting Atlantian firms, then.
Personally I think 9-10" is going to become the benchmark for heavy cruisers post-Cleito, which is why I'm shooting for that benchmark.
Like I said, it would be both a minelayer and minesweeper. And it is built on a destroyer hull.
Because the 10" gunned ships are far more common. The Hertogs got bitch slapped, so that just leaves the Radiance and Brilliance. That and I'm not going to put a ship armed with 9" guns against a ship armed with 11" guns if I can help it.
In designing the Amazonas I'm looking to utterly defeat the 10" guns of the Iberian/Peruvian/Chilean/Mexican "heavy" cruisers. Obviously, to do that, I need to know what caliber these guns are. I've been assuming a worst case scenario where the guns are L55 and fire USN-style superheavy shells and even then I'm confident I the Amazonas would be invulnerable at moderate ranges, but I want to get an exact fix.
The task forces are mainly to be hunter-killer raiding groups, although I'm fairly confident that if they steamed together they could probably defeat a battle squadron with moderate losses. On the mine warfare side, I'm thinking of a layer/clearer maybe based on the Margay hull, so roughly 2,500t displacement (I'm thinking a four-ship squadron per harbor.) I don't really plan on any frigates or sloops since those are essentially escort ships and as I said my merchant marine isn't large enough at...
I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't just forget the Rios as TF flagships and just round out the CapRon with Amazonas. Maybe construct a Rio as fleet flagship. EDIT: Er, looking for opinions here.
Quoted - minelayer - minesweeper I plan to put out a tender for a mine warfare vessel at some point. Quoted - floatplane tenders Don't really see the need for one, since the few floatplanes I have can be serviced from spares aboard their home ships. Quoted - carriers This is so low on my priorities it isn't even funny. Had I started in '20 I'd probably already have a division of carriers, but right now I'm more worried about having a modern cruiser force. Quoted - frigates - sloops At the momen...
I just adjusted the building program to account for the fact that the Falcon class has been cut in half and the entire light cruiser building program will end in Q1 '39. Which reminds me, all my Type 3s will be open in Q3 '38 for a bit, so if you wish you could officially buy the Rios then and I'll put them in docks for reconstruction.
I have eleven Margays (having lost one in the war), the Furacão class is just a re-run of the Margay class with d/p 120mm twin turrets, and most of the light cruisers will be done by '38. I also have plenty of submarines, although truth be told I'm eyeing the new Japanese classes to replace my older units. I expect I'll probably be done around '45 or '46, unless something changes.
Except that by the time the sim ends every single one of those ships will have been constructed within the last 11 years. Further, a lot of those ships will be heavy for their type. And finally, that's just the core of the fleet, there will be many other types of ships (I'm even thinking of adding a sixth task force for landing the marine brigade.) As for Mexico being able to deploy that many ships, is your order of battle not up to date? Because right now I only count 20 major fleet ships and 1...
I've been thinking about what I want the Marinha Imperial do Brasil to be. The Netunos are nice ships in my opinion, but are more of a luxury than a necessity to round out the fleet. I'll probably start building them in '44 so that I can at least say that I built, in my own yards, real capital ships before the sim is done. So with that in mind, I've gone back to the MIB being a fleet of raiders, without a proper battle line, and here's what I've come up with. Strategic Organization CapRon (2 x R...
My point was that its was all theoretical and nebulous between actual wars. Relatively speaking both WWI and WWII developed quickly. Brazil has a single absolutely defined enemy and several possibles, all more powerful on the seas. So not only do they have to look to their land assets, but they have to look to unconventional means to exert power and given the Exercito breathing room while it brings itself up to its full wartime strength (108 divisions.) Given the Empire's early anti-slavery bias...
But you have to look at why the US and European countries didn't keep special units during peace time. The reason is fairly simple, they had/have no constant threats to them. Brazil most certainly does, even in peace time. That's incentive enough to keep special units standing, especially for a nation that absolutely relies on its army for its survival.
It would be so like the French to make main guns that ornate.
