Depends on who's it is and how prone the person is to editing their encyclopedia posts; also how interesting I find their ships at the time. I tend to browse the Indian, Atlantean, Russian, and French directories quite regularly for ship ideas. Also regularly consult the Peruvian encyclopedia.

Somewhat often I guess. Depending on what type of ship I'm designing I sometimes take a look at others designs to compair or get inspiration. I also do some nation vs. nation comparison as well which has led to some specific ship programs or aquisitions, Colombia's lease of Tylor springs to mind, as she was a good counter to the Peruvian Callao.

Rarely. Early on I checked more so I have a notion of what folks had and that influenced my design choices to a degree.

Now,post-Cleito, much of my choices are based on what roles the Dutch need to fill combined with the Dutch expect folks are laying down.

To a certain extent I don't expect exact details of building or recently commissioned vessels to be public, so don't examine them in great detail. Plus the Polish reports nicely recapped matters for me :)

As others have said, it varies depends on what I'm up to and think I need to know when it comes to game-related research.

From a purely asthetic point of view, I tend to find the encyclopedias with more than just a wall of springsharp reports more compelling for browsing. Some pictures and history/rationale for a design goes a long way.

I tend to browse encyclopedias quite often. You cannot keep all the nations ships in your memory so when I read a story in the news board I tend to open a second window to check the stats. Another reason for me to browse the encies is to get some inspiration on designs and drawings, i.e. landing crafts.

Like Stephan, I often look through the encyclopaedias, having two windows open to quickly compare stats. Its useful for getting ideas for drawing as well.

Agreed. Folks might notice that I have a very exact way of organizing my encyclopedias to make the sims more readable, and I always try to make an index post which lists all of the ships and occasionally a summary. (And if there are a lot of posts in a particular file - for instance, the Chilean destroyer thread - I set up internal hyperlinks.)

Index posts are nice.
Low down on my "to do" list is to have a "Starter" page for each type that lists the names, class, service dates. Basically an index except I think of it as a starter page :)

Then go to the individual class, list a 'public' summary, put the remarks at the beginning, include any overhaul dates, then post the SS.

However, it would involve reposting *everything* since I can't play with RAMs stuff, and take a fair amount of time. Two reasons it stays low on my list.

Yep me too sometimes.

Index posts for larger powers are definately useful; I haven't really bothered with Canada since I usually only have one or two entries per section. The only exception is Light Cruisers (4) and Destroyers, I think.

What should such index look like? In general players tend to have one thread per ship category and one post per class. Isn´t that easy enough?

As with many of my posts I tend to have a summary post as the opener for say "Light Cruisers" listing the ships class and names of the ships in that class. I then proceed to post each individual class.

The first post of the Bulgarian Destroyers page is an example for what I like to do. I basically list each class, the ships in each class, and then describe in brief the strategy that drives the nation's designs. For instance, as you can see on the linked post, Bulgaria breaks destroyers down into escort destroyers (the Drazki-class) and surface-action oriented "contradestroyers" (the Kyustendil-class).

Well, it´s nice to have but also takes a lot of time when you own a large fleet. A brief summary also is not easy because strategy varies over time as does design philosophy.

Listing a class by ship (and the individual hulls fate) I support. I´m always confused if somebody uses a ship name that I cannot find in an encyclopedia until I note to which class the vssel belongs.

Don't you have the search option for that? :)

If for example Wes were to mention "Lago de Maracaibo" in one of the Atlantean news posts and I want to know more about it, the search option gives me 2 results and one of them is of the SS design.

Foxy is notorious for listing ship classes, but not what ships are in that class, for example Walter. :P

Well I get 4 (now 5 thanks to this thread) posts on "Lago de Maracaibo" but then again, I'm allowed to read the FAR forums!
