The cruiser looks good - I just wonder about her 150ts misc weight and why her main turrets have such thick side plates?

Her BC is really low for a ship her size, isn´t it?

Thursday, September 22nd 2005, 9:05am

Well to adress a few of your questions her turret armor is ecatly the same as the Menelaus class, only the barbette armor is increased.

Hector, Turret armor Main: 5.50" / 140 mm, 3.92" / 100 mm 3.92" / 100 mm

Menelaus, Turret armor Main: 5.50" / 140 mm 3.92" / 100 mm 3.15" / 80 mm

As for her BC its lower then that of the Menelaus class but not the lowest...

0.460 Hector class
0.470 Menelaus class
0.436 U.S. Northampton class

I just thought 100mm is quite a lot relatively to her faceplate. Could be wrong but in general side armor is the thinnest on a turret mount (back plate is thicker to counterbalance the weight of the barrels) and often has only a thickness of half the face plate. This is of course just a rule of thumb at best but might save some tons. :o)

Wouldn't 3.92 be an average, seeing as SS states the side plates as "other above deck"?

I´m not sure. I guess only Ian can answer how he calculates/deals with turret plate thickness. He probably assumes homogenous thicknesses for all other plates (including top plate)....

8

Thursday, September 22nd 2005, 10:04am

Side thickness is an average of sides, rear and roof.

For an average figure;

Number of guns=E25
Side armour=E26
Rear armour=E27
Top armour=E28

=(E26*2+E28*E25+E27*(E25/3))/(2+E25+(E25/3))

9

Thursday, September 22nd 2005, 10:08am

So if its a generalized thickness for the turret sides, roof and back then 3.95" would be sufficient mefinks. That would average out to roughly 2.5" for the sides and the thicker roof and rear plates?

Thicker roof plates than 100mm on a cruiser her size?

11

Monday, September 26th 2005, 12:05am

How would you suggest the turrets be armored? If the turret roof is 100 mm then the sides should be 60mm and rear 70mm?
