Japanese Warships for 1926

(I feel that everything on the board is slowing down slightly which is probably caused by Christmas, so...)

Your thoughts on these two ‘different’ ships.
Japan has now a capital ship force consisting of the Mikasa PD, four Fuso class BB and two Nagato class BB. That is a total of 7 hulls and 211,530 tons. This leaves me with 5 hulls and 148,470 tons. With a three-ship class for a total of 120,000 tons to be constructed in a few years time, that would leave me with 2 hulls and 28,470 tons. I brushed up two other designs and use them to fill the final two positions in Japan’s capital ship category. Yes, I could build a 28,000 ton battle cruiser or build two 14,000 ton Basilan type heavy cruisers, but that is probably something everyone would do. Perhaps I am wasting my tons here, but I wanted to build something that the other player navies would probably not build using their capital ship tonnage. Something different.
(note that the ship tonnages given above are 95% of the actual tonnages (using the 5% cheat))

Note that although these two ships will count against the capital ship tonnage, they will not be classified as capital ships but as coast defense ships so the data will appear there once construction starts and not in the capital ship thread.

How come 40mm AA and not 50mm?

3

Why have 20" thick armour? It is more or less impossible to create armour plates that thick. Quality seriously deteriorates after ~ 420mm thick. How about a 4" thick plate on the outer hull with a 16" belt inboard? more or less proof from all shells.

The monitor needs a raised mount as otherwise not all platforms below gunplatform of the turret machinery will fit into her hull....

I second RAs comment on armor thickness.

5

The second seems more useful

23,000 tons is a lot just to get 4x12" going 23kts. And RA is right, nobody could roll 20" plate in 1926.

Well you guy know it better, so that is why I posted the designs to see if I needed to make a few adjustments on those two designs. Still, I thought that with an 1890s design that had an 18 inch main belt it wouldn't be too impossible to have a 1920s design (30 years later) to have a 20 inch belt. Of course that 18" of the Fuji was amidship only. But one needs to sim the armor thickness as maximum so the Fuji would have to be simmed with an 18 inch belt.
I can always 'split' that main belt armor up as 0.4 inch , 4 inch, and 16.1 inch or slightly different. I'll take a look a bit later what exactly I will do.
I'll adjust the monitor as well. Slightly sloppy work on my part regarding the main turret.
