She´s a replacement for my old POLAR-class sloops. I bet you asked because of her machinery, right?

I thought a reciprocating steam engines with mixed firing would it make easier to operate this type of vessel in the extreme south. Even in 1932 I think there´s some merrit in having an engine you can fire with everything that burns - expecially when operating in extreme conditions.

... now why do I get this image of the South African Captain and his crew ripping away all the wood aboard his ship in order to fuel his engines?

Hmmm.... Looks like we see similar things sometimes. :o)

Extreme South? I'd hardly call Cape Agulhas extreme south. I'm sure the RSAN would patrol a bit further south, but there isn't much in the way of land or ships there.

Reciprocating engines are probably best for this application. Low tech, easy to fix, reliable at low revs, more efficient at low revs.

Those ships will be based on the Prince Eduard Islands and patrol the fishing fleets etc in the Arctic - just like the old POLAR-class did.
