Yugoslav News, 2Q 1938

Royal Yugoslav Air Force Headquarters – Belgrade – Saturday, 9 April 1938

Effective immediately the C-5 Halcon fighter aircraft will be withdrawn from service and turned over to the Defence Material Reutilisation Office for disposition.


Novosti News Agency – Bihac – Monday, 18 April 1938

Chief of the Air Staff Major-General Todor Milicevic superintended the opening today of the newly completed Zeljava Air Base near here. The festivities of the day included both air and ground demonstrations of the Air Force’s newly received Bavarische Flugzeug Werke Bf-109A single-seat interceptors and the Junkers Ju-87B dive bomber.

Nos.68 and 69 (Bomber) Squadrons will operate the Ju-87B from the Zeljava Air Base, while General Milicevic announced that Nos. 41 and 42 (Fighter-Interceptor) Squadrons will operate the Bf-109A in defence of the capital. Sources suggest that the Air Force may seek additional quantities of both aircraft as part of the Air Modernisation programme presented to Parliament last month.

Report of assessment of Fabrika Oruzje I Municje Uzice a.d.

This firm is presently under contract to the Ministry of Defence for the manufacture of light infantry weapons, small arms ammunition, artillery shells, primers and fuses, and for the refurbishment of small arms. With current working capital and equipment this firm is considered capable of the following monthly output.

M29 Service Rifles – 6,000; M28 Machine Rifles – 50; M30 Medium Machineguns – 50; Ammunition – up to 4,000,000 cartridges per month including 7.92mm Mauser, 9mm Parabellum; 75mm Artillery Shells – complete, with fuse and primer – 3,000 units.

The firm relies upon imported materials and components to a significant degree; contracts have been placed by the management to acquire additional machine tools and increase material stockpiles to increase production capacity by up to twenty five percent.


Novosti News Service – Belgrade – Saturday, 18 June 1938

The Defence Ministry announced yesterday that it had placed orders with the Lockheed Aircraft Company of Burbank, California for the supply of thirty-six Lockheed Model 212 twin-engine aircrew training aircraft. A variant of the firm’s successful Model 12 Electra Junior airliner the new aircraft will be used to train pilots, observers, navigators and wireless operators at the new Air Observers’ School at Nis. It is not known at this time whether additional aircraft will be acquired at a future date.

The Ministry also announced that it had procured from the Pratt and Whitney Engine Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut licence manufacture rights for the R-895N Wasp and R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engines, and will contract with Industria Motora Rakovica a.d. to manufacture these aircraft engines for use by the Air Force and for the civil aviation industry.

Yes, the Luftwaffe's handing off it's Bf-109As to the Yugoslavs so it can standardize on the later models.

It is what I found in the pile of deals for the war that was not. I am hoping to post something of an air order of battle fairly soon.

Actually, those orders predated the war plans, but the size of the orders was increased when Foxy started plotting the war.
