Yugoslav News 3Q 1938

Swiss Defence Review – Zurich – Monday, 18 July 1938

In its quest to attain a measure of self-sufficiency in armaments production Yugoslavia has widened its horizons for the procurement of industrial equipment. Last week Waffenfabrik Oerlikon announced it had received contracts with 60 million francs for the supply of lathes, hydraulic presses, broaching machines and tools and other jigs to equip a factory for the production of Oerlikon’s well-known 20mm antiaircraft gun. Our correspondent in Budapest reports that the Hungarian General Machine Works of Budapest has received contracts to supply Yugoslavia with a variety of multi-purpose machine tools and the Rimamurany Salgorarian Iron Works will be supplying steel billets and forgings for the manufacture of armaments. From its traditional source of supply Yugoslavia will be receiving both cordite and trotyl from the Czech firm of A.s. pro prumysl vybusin 'Explosia' and barrels and receivers for the manufacture of rifles from the First Brno Engineering Company. Both of these procurements are seen as making good domestic shortfalls in supply.

The freighter Dubrovnik of the Jugoslovenska Lloyd arrived here today marking the conclusion of her maiden voyage on her owners’ new service to New York City. She carried a mixed cargo of general freight that included crated automobiles, machine tools, cotton goods, metals and foodstuffs. Of particular note were her deck cargo of three Lockheed Super Electra airliners destined for Yugoslav Aero Transport and the fifty aero engines in her hold – twenty five each of the Pratt and Whitney Wasp and Twin-Wasp type consigned to the State Aircraft Factory.

Captain Stevan Dedijer was dressed in mufti, but his directness betrayed his military bearing as he spoke to his associate.

“What of our purchases in America,” he asked. “Have the contracts for Project 220 been placed?”

Herr Lindemann, manager of the import-export firm that acted on behalf of the Yugoslavs, considered his words carefully. Nominally an ordinary Swiss businessman Lindemann was in fact Dedijer’s factorum and creation.

“Yes,” he replied. “The Birdsboro Machine and Foundry Company acknowledged its contract to supply three 100-ton Danly hydraulic metal forming presses – we were able to hold them to only 500,000 dollars.” Dedijer nodded. Lindemann continued, “The Lake Erie Engineering Corporation accepted our contract for three 20-ton and three 35-ton Dennison presses, and should be shipping them in March of next year.”

“Excellent,” Dedijer added with approval. “Anything else?”

“We have made some progress with Wilde-Heerbrug – they have agreed to supply ninety of their panoramic rangefinders by the end of the year. You have seen what they are asking for a licence – it is still beyond what Belgrade has authorized.” Lindemann shrugged.

“I will advise them and ask that they reconsider the price,” Dedijer concluded. “And we will continue talks. All in all we are making progress.”
