Addendum: If the Chinese lack radial engine of this power category the SAE aircraft indusry might offer something adequate. Both the Rayton Double Pegasus as used in the F-14 and the BMG Twin Hornet used in the F-11 could be used instead of your X24 engine.

Harbin Ha-236

Harbin Ha-236
Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation Ltd.
TYPE: Heavy Night Fighter

To combat the nightly japanese bombing raids, Harbin developed at its own risk the Harbin Ha-236. The design began as a multi-role combat aircraft, but it soon became apparent that this aircraft is a fast and stable weapons platform and excellent for instrument flight. Although the Ha-236 is outside similar to the Ha-36, it is still an independent new development.

The Harbin Ha-236 is a twin engined, shoulder-wing cantilever aircraft of the manufacturer Harbin. The fuselage was an all-metal structure built in three main sections. These consisted of the nose section, which accommodated the cockpit for the crew; the section built integrally with the wing centre section; and the rear fuselage. It has two horizontal stabilizers on the outer end of the horizontal stabilizers. The engines and their supporting struts were positioned well forward of the leading edge allowing plenty of room for the undercarriage and other components. In the upper forward part of the nacelle the de-icing tank was located. The undercarriage was the main structure in this part of the aircraft. Each main unit comprised two oleo legs and a single wheel. It was retracted electrically via the crew in the cockpit. In the extreme tail unit, the tail wheel was retractable and had its own folding doors.

A special feature of the Ha-236C is not only the equipment with GM-1 booster units to increase performance at extreme altitudes. But also the charge of the aircraft engines by an additional charger Engine. The two EWIL R-2400 engines supercharged by a single GWM V-1500 engine, in a so-called Central-Altitude Installation in the central fuselage solely for powering a shaft-driven centrifugal supercharger.

Well, that's an interesting idea.

I think the third engine powering the supercharger was only done on one or two series-built aircraft, though I may be forgetting something. In both cases, it was a much larger bomber, and the engine used was smaller in size and horsepower. At least when the French trialed it IRL, the design didn't provide all that much benefit, particularly in comparison to the costs involved with the weight, fuel use, and most particularly maintenance.

In WW, the French did use that setup briefly on a production bomber, but it was retired relatively quickly.

I think there were a couple of German projects, possibly Soviet ones too with similar layouts.
Not unreasonable given the state of progress Chinese has likely made.

the Petlyakov Pe-8 IIRC used a 5th engine in the nose.

the Petlyakov Pe-8 IIRC used a 5th engine in the nose.

That's correct, though I think later models removed it as a source of problems (fire, maintenance, weight, etc) once more up-to-date technology became available.

I agree with Hood that it's a quirky-but-reasonable choice for China to use to conquer a technological hurdle, although I still think that APU engine is much larger than it needs to be.

Nanchan Ying

Nanchan Ying ("Bussard")
Nanchan Aircraft Inc. Ltd.
Type: high speed target tug

The Nanchan Ying is a twin-engined chinese target tug aircraft designed and built by Nanchan Aircraft Inc. Ltd. The Ying came about as a response to the sprecification for a twin-engined high-speed target tug for the Chinese Air Force. The specification called for a towing speed of not less than 450 km/h and an endurance of 3–4 hours. The first prototype was capable of reaching 580 km/h.
The Ying is a high-winged aircraft with an all-metal fuselage and wooden wings. The aircraft is powered by two radial engines driving standard propellers. It is fitted with a hydraulic winch as the normal windlasses could not be used at speeds of much more than 240 km/h, while the Ying was required to tow targets at double this speed.
The Ying's 10 hp (7.5 kW) winch is fitted with 6,000 ft (1,800 m) of towing cable, and is capable of towing flag and sleeve targets as well as 16 and 32 ft (4.9 and 9.8 m) -span special winged targets. Spare targets could be stowed on board and could be changed in flight, while winged targets were towed off the ground on a 250 feet (76 m) line.

Guizhou GA-2

Guizhou GA-2

The experience of the Sino-Chosen War have shown that the chinese medium bombers are either too slow or have an insufficient bomb load. So Guizhou was commissioned to develop a bomber with appropriate bomb load and speed.

The GA-2 is an all-metal high-wing monoplane with twin tail. It has a fully retractable nose gear. The GA-2 has a spacious internal 5.7m long bomb bay and also additional bomb racks between fuselage and engines.

Based on experience, the Guizhou Aviation owns in aircraft, the chinese HQ has been dispensed the usual prototypes for testing and ordered 200 aircraft from the drawing board; The maiden flight was on June 26 1945.

Gangchuan A-6

Gangchuan A-6
Gangchuan Aviation
Type: Attack Plane & Bomber Aircraft

The Gangchuan A-6 is a twin engined attack aircraft built by Gangchuan Aviation . It was a direct competitor to the Guizohou GA-2 bomber.

The aircraft is designed as a cantilever mid-wing monoplane. The central part of the wing is straight and in the leading edge of the wings are the air intakes for the radiators, also it has elliptical tapered outer wings. The nacelles of the motors are used for receiving the main landing gear wheels, the tail wheel is also retractable. The vertical fins are designed as two end plates, and are integrated left and right of the horizontal stabilizer. The front and the lower part of the bow are glazed for improved visibility.

The production was closed in December 1945, after a little over 100 built aircraft, in favor of the Guizhou GA-2 bomber. And Gangchuan Aviation focused on the successor of the Gangchuan F-5 Heavy Fighter.
