Bristol Buckingham

Bristol Type 163 Buckingham; a Blenheim replacement with better speed, range, bombload and self-defensive armament. A crew of four is carried and the self-defence armament consists of a dorsal turret with four .303in Browning MGs, four more fixed in the nose and two more on a ventral cupola. Bombload is 4,000lbs. First flight is planned for early 1940 and 250 are on order. Entry into service was late 1941.

In 1942 Avro began design work on a modernised Lancaster bomber with improved ceiling and range. In 1944 in response to RAAF requirements Avro took their design and further modified it with greater gross weight and the engines were changed for four Rolls-Royce Griffon V-12 engines. The prototype first flew in Britain in March 1945 and following completion of trials was shipped to Australia for further work and to act as a pattern aircraft for local production by Australian Aviation. 85 aircraft were built 1945-47 to equip the long-range bomber force.

Australian Aviation began work on a new medium-range bomber to meet an RAAF and RANAS requirement for replacement for the Bristol Buckingham and CAC-14 Wombat in the tactical bomber and torpedo bomber roles. The layout was developed from the AA-39 Monarch airship fighter in having a rear-wing with end-fins and a forward canard wing. Turboprop engines were acquired from Britain for good performance and range and after armament trials it was decided to fit a quartet of the new British 30mm ADEN cannon. Two wingtip fuel tanks can be fitted to increase range. The first of three prototypes was first flown in July 1947 and 90 were built for the RAAF and RANAS from 1948 to 1949.
