It gives the ship a useful increase in life. Perhaps not the most scariest of captial ships in Southern Waters but one that certainly Colombia can brag about. It's still fast and pretty well armoured.

Decent enough cruiser-killer indeed, though I'd have sought a different balance of some of the different elements, particularly the armour. The thickness of the TDS, particularly in comparison to the rest of the armour, seems exorbitantly thick.

Given the fact that the Rio's were sunk in harbour by torpedo's explains somewhat why the TDS is quite strong and it also similates strenthening of the hull given the level of damage they recieved.

Modifing the side armour would be quite an extensive modification, one that few ships in real life ever recieved. I'm not sure the design has room for increasing the side armour in addition to the heavy TDS but I might take a kick at the can.

Is that a real upper belt, or just an extension of the TDS up to main deck level and/or a decapping plate? If it's a real upper belt it may be more useful to just delete it since you don't have casemated secondaries anymore or inversely thicken it so it'll actually stop a ~6" HE/SAP round. 40mm isn't much good either way.

Tuesday, November 29th 2011, 10:34pm

The Rio's never had casemated guns. As for the armor scheme you'd have to talk to Swampy as its his design, I'd always assumed that the main/upper belt were seperate from the TDS and that the upperbelt was to protect from splinters and that it met up with a splinter deck.

I think it looks like a decent rebuild for a pretty average ship.

Corrected the shell weight for the 12" guns and added 100 tons additional misc weight.

Digging through the past looking for original info on the Rio's I found a few tidbits that may prove useful on refit. All are from either Swampy (who designed them) or Frywulf (who bought them).

Quoted

The guns are new 55-calibre weapons
- Referring to the 12"

Quoted

The secondary turrets on the "Samal" type ships were originally designed as triple 155mm mounts. Due to weight concerns Samal and Bohol had their trimmed to extremly roomy twins. These ships, with the lighter 120mm guns, return to a triple mount, but the turret size is still for 3x155, so there will be no reduction of RoF on account of cramping.

Conflicting armor layouts

Quoted

210mm main belt+40mm decapping plate

And

Quoted

250mm for a height of 3.5m, with a thin 'upper belt' for 0.5m above that
