With the arrival of sufficient Focke Wulf Fw190 fighters from Germany and Jastreb fighter bombers from the Soko works at Mostar, the Eclipse Hurricane has been retired from service with the Royal Yugoslav Air Force. In other air force developments, No.203 (Troop Carrier) Squadron has been formed at Dakovica with the LWS/Nakajima L2N1 twin engined transports manufactured in Poland. The L2N1 earned a sterling reputation supporting League of Nations troops in Afghanistan where No.202 (Troop Carrier) garnered many commendations.

The Defence Ministry has released some details of the new Soko Orao single-seat fighter, formerly designated Project 225. The first prototype has begun limited flight testing here, and thus far has exhibited excellent performance and handling characteristics. A spokesman for the Soko factory has confirmed that the aircraft will be powered by a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 eighteen-cylinder radial engine, and it is predicted that the aircraft will be capable of achieving a speed of 700 kph at altitude. Armament will be six 13.2mm M37 machineguns plus a variety of underwing ordnance. It is expected that the Orao will eventually succeed the Focke Wulf Fw190 in service with the Royal Yugoslav Air Force. When asked when the aircraft might enter production, our source suggested some time in a 1942/43 timeframe, should the testing programme proceed without serious setback.



Novosti News Service – Belgrade, Tuesday, 15 July 1941

The freighter Zagreb was launched today at the shipyards of Belgrade, the fourth river-sea freighters built for the Danube Sea Shipping Company. Two of these vessels are presently employed on the DINTCO joint service to South America; the Zagreb and her sister, the Vukovar, will be employed on services linking the Danube basin with the Western Mediterranean.

The engine is a Pratt and Whitney product manufactured under license in Yugoslavia. No foreign assistance was provided in the design of the airframe.

His Majesty King Alexsandr visited the city today to formally open the newly reconstructed commercial port. Combined with the completion of the Durres-Tirana Railway, it is expected that the opening of the port will significantly boost commerce and development in the southern portion of the Kingdom.

A spokesman for the Defence Ministry announced today that in the forthcoming months that it, in cooperation with firms of the Yugoslav aero industry, will promote a demonstration tour through friendly nations in Eastern Europe. Visits to Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Turkey were mentioned; however, dates and details were not announced, though it is speculated that among the aircraft to participate is the Soko Zmaj twin engine light bomber, deliveries of which have recently begun to the Royal Yugoslav Air Force.

Sources inside the Defence Ministry report that the French LeO400 reconnaissance seaplane, recently demonstrated to the military authorities at Bar, is under serious consideration for acquisition. When asked regarding the validity of such reports the French embassy here eschewed all comment. The Navy has been recommending expansion of its maritime reconnaissance force and acquisition of such aircraft would be in keeping with that goal; the current debate centers on which of the services would operate the aircraft.

The section of the Autostrady A1 linking this city with Subotica and its extension to the Hungarian border was formally opened to day by Crown Prince Petar, representing His Majesty. It is now possible to drive from the capital to the Hungarian border in a matter of hours over the best motor road in the Kingdom; construction of the Autostrady A1 from the Belgrade to the Bulgarian border continues.

The Association of Aircraft Manufacturers, in conjunction with the Defence Ministry, announced details of the demonstration tour planned for the upcoming months. Examples of the nation’s leading aircraft will depart this Wednesday for Bucharest in Romania, the first stop on the tour, which will include Warsaw, Sofia, Athens, Byzantium, Ankara, and – in a very surprising revelation – Damascus, in Syria. There high hopes that the tour will provide the national aviation industry with significant export orders; whether these will be fulfilled remains to be seen.
